Brian Loyall Mackin
After a brief period of illness, Brian L. Mackin passed away
at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on December
25th, 2020. Born in Saint John, NB in
1949, he is the son of the late Loyall G. and Doreen G. (Payne) Mackin
and the loving husband of Jane A. (Greene) Mackin of Fredericton,
NB.
Brian began his career as a Correctional Officer at the Youth
Training Centre, but never one to remain sedentary; he went back to
university and acquired his Bachelor of Education. He taught
at Harvey High School for one year, where he was loved by a great
number of his students, many of whom, he remained in contact with over
the years. He returned to working for the province at the
Central Reformatory where he taught at «the
farm«. From there, Brian filled the role of
Training Officer at Central Office before spending more than 12 years
as the Director of Corrections for the province of New Brunswick
before his retirement. Brian was a Member and Past President
of the Fredericton City Club and was on the Board of Directors of
Bridges Canada
Brian`s first love was curling and he was a fixture in
the curling community for over 50 years, winning the 1967 New
Brunswick Junior Championship, the 1974 New Brunswick Men`s
Championship and representing NB at the Brier. He also won
three New Brunswick Mixed Championships in 1972, 1979, and 1983, as
well as, the NB 2015 Masters. All while, proudly representing the
Capital Winter Club. He also had the extreme pleasure of
achieving an «eight ender« during his curling
adventures.
A close second to his love of curling, was Brian`s
passion for golf and over a 25 year span, he and his buddies made many
memories travelling to Myrtle Beach to golf yearly. He also
enjoyed rounds at the time share in Samoset. Lawn bowling at
Wilmot Park had become a favorite pass time over the last few years
and the many marvellous trips to the cottage at Harvey Lake with Jane
and Marsha and his girls were irreplaceable.
Brian was a wonderful husband and father and he adored his
family. His granddaughters were the light in his eye and
they filled his heart with immense joy.
Along with his beloved wife of 48 years, Jane, Brian is
survived by his only daughter, Marsha Mackin and his precious
granddaughters: Shyanne and Sierra Mackin, all of Fredericton; his
brother Greg and Genesca Mackin of Saint John; his sisters: Brenda and
Paul McGraw and Sharon Byrne, both of Saint John and many nieces,
nephews and extended family members and
friends.
In addition to his parents, Brian was predeceased by his
brothers Paul and Pat Mackin, brother-in-law Gerry Byrne and
sister-in-law Lynn Mackin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care and
direction of McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street,
Fredericton, NB (506) 458-9170. Due to the current gathering
restrictions, a service celebrating Brian’s Life will be
held at a future date with details announced at that time.
