SMITH, Arthur Warren – We are heart-broken as we announce the death of Arthur Warren Smith, age 62, of Upper Woods Harbour on July 31, 2020. Arthur, or “Artie” as he was fondly known, passed away after a twenty-four year battle with his health. The last eight, he spent three days per week at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in the dialysis unit due to renal failure. Artie spent much of his working life at Sable Fish Packers as a fork lift operator, as well as in the departments of lobster and salt fish. He absolutely loved working there with the crew and his supervisors, Elijah Symonds and “Buttons” Ross. He especially enjoyed sharing stories, or as Artie would say, “Having a yarn” with the fishermen who sold their product there. However, Artie’s greatest accomplishment was becoming a Dad to his two beautiful daughters, Kelsie and Kylee Goreham Smith. He didn’t just “love” his daughters. He absolutely adored and cherished them. He was proud of their accomplishments, and he was by their side supporting them for any special event, singing competition, figure skating, swimming lesson, or piano lesson, etc. He would drive to Yarmouth for his four- hour dialysis treatment, leave Yarmouth at noon and then drive to Halifax to pick up the girls at Dalhousie University and HDC and bring them home for the weekend. Devoted is an understatement. Artie is survived by his wife of 32 years/ partner for 38 years, Lee Goreham-Smith, and two daughters, Kelsie Goreham Smith and Kylee Goreham Smith, as well as his special fur baby, Sophie, who laid by his side. He is also survived by his special sister, Priscilla Landry, (Irvin), Centreville, Cape Sable Island, a brother, Philip Smith, (Brenda) Edmonton, Alberta, and brother, Lovitte Blades, (Prue), The Hawk, Cape Sable Island. Artie had many nieces and nephews and he enjoyed family gatherings with Stacy Thorburn, Liverpool, Samantha Nickerson, Barrington, Morty Smith, Alberta, Troy, Bobby and Brandon Blades, originally from The Hawk, Shawn Landry, Centreville, and Jeff and Greg Smith, Edmonton. Artie also had numerous cousins, and great nieces and nephews. He loved his family and his very special friends, especially Davis and Susan Nickerson, Woods Harbour, and Paul and Amber Hiltz, Shag Harbour. Artie was predeceased by his special brother, and “Best Man,” Paul Smith (Sherry), Port Clyde, a brother, Stanley in infancy, and by his parents, Marie and Aldon Smith, The Hawk, Cape Sable Island. Other family who predeceased him include his favorites Maternal Grammie Jennie Blades and Gramp Angus Blades, The Hawk, Paternal Grandparents Lula (Huskins) Smith and Elias Smith, Swims Point; Uncles, Arthur Smith, his namesake, Durant Smith, and George Smith, Stanley Smith, as well as his aunt, Muriel Smith; mother in law, Elsie Goreham, father in law, Wordlow Goreham, Lower Woods Harbour and sister in law, Rosemary Nickerson, West Head. Visitation will be held at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington, on Monday, August 3 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. Artie’s Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Calvary United Baptist Church, Woods Harbour on Tuesday, August 4, at 2 p.m. Covid 19 Protocols will be followed, and the church can be filled at half capacity, approximately 150 people. A reception will follow at the Woods Harbour Community Centre. Artie was a very kind, helpful, and considerate man who had a huge heart. He enjoyed people and would have loved having people come to acknowledge and celebrate his life. Family or friend flowers are appreciated. Donations in his memory may be made to the Yarmouth Regional Hospital Dialysis Unit for the purpose of new furniture for the dialysis patient lounge / waiting area, the Barrington Lions Club, the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund, Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School, Shag Harbour, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Lee, Kelsie and Kylee would like to express their thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped and supported Artie during his journey toward good health: the nurses and doctors at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, especially Dr. Moses, and Dr. Chahal, the nurses in the Dialysis Unit, the Registration Desk ladies (thank you for your kindness), Samantha Mason, Yarmouth Hospital Social Worker, the VON (Mary Dawn Greenwood and Lisa Bateman), Continuing Care staff, especially Marie Currie, EHS (all of you have been so helpful), the Cardiac Care Team at the QE II Infirmary, especially Dr. Nadeem and Keith Warren, and Palliative Care (Dr. Gillis and Tracy Smith). Artie is now “absent from the body, and present with the Lord.” When he closed his eyes here on earth, he opened them in Heaven. He will always be deeply loved and missed by his family and friends.
