Arthur Samuel Bishop Winsor – Aurora, ON. Son. Husband. Father. Poppie. Brother. Friend, passed away on August 27th, 2020. Like the spiritual song says, the sweet chariot swung low to carry him Home. It’s comforting to know his spirit was released from his body and he is now with Christ. “To be absent from the body, [is] to be present with the Lord,” 2 Corinthians 5:8. He is reunited with his Heavenly Father, family, and friends who have gone on before. Arthur is survived by his deeply loved wife, Mildred, his dear brothers, Gary, Wilmer and Baxter, his children Susan and John (Kelly) as well as his beloved grandchildren, Bishop, Carter, Shepherd, Cole, and Winsor-Grace.
Born in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland in 1935, to Reverends Arthur and Palmer Winsor, Arthur grew up in Port de Grave and started working for the Bank of Nova Scotia at age 15 sweeping floors. After a brief diversion to the Airforce for officer training, Arthur quickly returned to banking, progressing rapidly to executive positions. It was in the bank that he met Sonja. They fell in love, married, travelled, raised a family and spent 58 beautiful years together. Eventually moving from Bay Roberts to Bay Street, from there his career with Scotiabank took him to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. His spirit and wit was always quick, he was constantly curious, an avid reader and had expert financial acumen. Arthur finished his career as the CEO of Shepherd Village where his passion for people, coupled with his leadership capability saw the seniors complex develop and open its first life lease facility. Arthur was a long standing member of Agincourt Pentecostal Church, serving on the board for many years, but most importantly, benefiting from the deep relationships developed during that time.
Arthur loved his family, especially Mildred whom he married in 2016 and for whom he broadcast his love far and wide. He always wanted and loved Mildred to be by his side. Also, Arthur loved all sports, excelling at Hockey, playing competitively in Newfoundland and eventually becoming the editor of Scotia Bank Hockey News while working for the bank. He loved games of any sort, checkers was always an easy win for him and scrabble was a staple. He loved food, namely porridge with molasses, bake apples and cream, fish of any kind. A master craftsman, Arthur, with the help of his beloved first wife, Sonja, built two beautiful cottages by hand from the ground up and within those walls family and friends were brought together and many wonderful memories were made. One of his gifts was connecting with people, young and old alike, making everyone feel appreciated. In conversation with him you’d notice Arthur loved to tell stories. Often humorous tales from his childhood in Newfoundland or adventures with friends. In addition, Arthur knew the power of a beautifully timed practical joke… Once placing sunflower seeds in a colleague’s unopened umbrella to later learn his colleague, seeking to be chivalrous had unwittingly opened his umbrella showering seeds on the woman to whom he was extending courtesy. Arthur’s humor mixed with his wisdom and kindness, made it a pleasure to be in his company.
We were blessed to learn many life lessons from Arthur during his 85 years, among them: servitude, integrity, honesty, consistency, and above all to love God. He always put others first. Leading by example, he taught us to intentionally seek to do the right thing, to avoid judging others, to understand that actions are louder than words in the “share the gospel continuously using words only if necessary” kind of way. Arthur was a protector and a provider. He was a good friend, a purposeful friend and a social guy, a ‘people person’. Most recently, he endeared himself to the hospital staff at Southlake Regional Health Center; receiving beautiful care under their attention. With plenty of dear friends on social media, Arthur enjoyed keeping current with how everyone was doing.
Arthur was intentional in showing his love for his immediate family as well as his extended family: uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. All knew they were loved. His legacy will live on through the lives of his family and those he impacted.
John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die. And whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.”
