Anastasia Marie « Anne » MacDonald
1947-2020
Anastasia (Anne) Marie MacDonald (Rogers), Age 73, passed
away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on December
16th, 2020.
Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Edward
« Ned » and Catherine Isabelle
« Katie » (MacDonald) Rogers of Seabright, Antigonish
County.
Anne was quite possibly the most genuine person you would
have met. She was kind to everyone and was ready to help whenever she
could. She loved a good joke and was known for her
« foolishness ». She was a very calm person,
who did not « fret » about many things. She
was logical and felt that everything would work itself out.
She had a remarkably positive attitude and a graceful spirit
throughout her long journey with pancreatic cancer. She enjoyed going
fishing and had a lucky streak in her when it came to playing cards
and going to BINGO. She lived in Beaver Brook trailer court for over
30 years and was known by many as « Nanny Anne ». The
neighborhood kids and her grandson were always welcomed into her
kitchen to help bake cookies, biscuits, or any number of goodies. One
of the last things she wanted to accomplish (and did) was her
Christmas baking. She was keen to make everyone’s’
favourites, so this meant there were dozens upon dozens of sweets to
make. She spent the last few years living in the Keppoch
with her son and his family. She loved being in the country,
often making mention that it was like « going home »
to her family homestead; as she cared for the chickens, turkeys, and
other family pets.
For many years, Anne worked at St. Martha’s
Hospital in the kitchen. This job suited her social personality and
caring nature. She took the time to connect with (meaning
she teased the heck out of) the nurses, doctors and other hospital
staff who came into the cafeteria. Anne had a wonderful
memory and always remembered every person she met. Her keen
memory entitled her to the role of family genealogist.
Whenever cousins, nieces/nephews, or others had questions about the
family tree, Anne was sure to know the answer and she would usually
have a fun story to go along with it.
Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband,
Donald Joseph MacDonald, her brothers, Fredrick Joseph
« Freddy » (Mary Delores) and Thomas Alexander
« Tommy » (Agnes), a sister in infancy, and
sister-in-law, Mary Margaret « Dodie »
MacDonald.
Anne valued family and although she did not say « I
love you » often, she showed her family every
day.
She was a devoted mother with a very special bond with her
son, James « Jimmy », his wife Nicole, and only
grandson, Jesse. She is also survived by her sister, Sara
Marie (Ralph) Hayne of Country Harbour, and brother, James (Jessie)
Rogers of Fredericton, NB; brother-in-law, James Bernard
« Bernie » MacDonald (Laurel Goodwin); sisters-in-law,
Cathy (Ed) Brown and Carole (Ernie) Connors. She had many
nieces and nephews whom she enjoyed seeing grow and have families of
their own.
Special thanks to the St. Martha’s palliative team
and VON who guided us in providing care for Anne at home. We were
given the gift of many special moments by carrying out
Anne’s wish to be home in her final days.
There will be no visitation, and a private family funeral
will be held in the spring. In Memoriam, donations to St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation (Oncology Department)
appreciated.
