Born February 18th, 1933. Died December 25th, 2020
It is with great sadness I inform you of the passing of Alice “Ruth” Dunning at the age of 87 at the Westman Nursing Home in Virden, on Friday the 25th of December after a brief illness.
Ruth was born on the family farm near McAuley, Manitoba. She grew up there and married at a young age. She then lived in Regina, Saskatchewan, where her first-born son Harris came into the world. In the next year, the family moved and settled in Virden where her second son, Dale, was born. Ruth resided in Virden for the rest of her life, spending the last year at the Westman Nursing Home until her health deteriorated over the last month.
Ruth was a vibrant lady who lived to enjoy life and all it had to offer. A few years ago, pushing the age of 80, while on a trip to a destination wedding for one of her step-granddaughters she went para-sailing and swam with the dolphins. Her grandson, Bryce McEwen, described his grandmother as a laid back lady who wouldn’t take crap from anyone. Some of her favorite activities included sewing, knitting, playing music (she was an accomplished accordion and piano/keyboard player), and having a beer (or two) on a hot day.
Ruth was very proud to be a member of the Royal Purple Ladies in Virden for 58 years. She served as the Honored Royal Lady for the Virden lodge in 1968-69 and was made an Honorary Life Member in 1997. She also served as the pianist for the Virden lodge for many years.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Elwyn Dunning, her mother and father Henry and Ina Mallett, her sister Joyce Poole, her brother John Mallett, her first husband Dick McEwen, her eldest son Harris McEwen, and her step-son Michael Dunning. Ruth is survived by her son Dale (Carol), step-sons Chuck Dunning, Bruce (Suzanne) Dunning, step-daughter Cindy (Don Johnson) Dunning, and step-son Lance (Charlene Forbes) Dunning. Ruth is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great, great grandchildren and cousins in her extended families of the Dunnings, McEwens, and Malletts.
As per Ruth’s wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no formal service. Ruth’s remains will be laid to rest next to her late husband Elwyn Dunning, in the columbarium in the Virden cemetery at a later date.
Ruth would not want everybody to spend much of your time mourning or grieving her. She would rather everybody pour themselves a cold beer or a stiff drink and say cheers.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to WesMan Nursing Home – Activities Department P.O. Box 1630 Virden, Manitoba R0M 2C0 in memory of Ruth.
