There’s a story behind everything . . .
But behind all our stories,
is always your mother’s story,
Because hers is where yours begin.
– Mitch Albom
Ada Howatt was one of three daughters born to Bert and Eva Webber. Ada, her twin sister Elva, and their younger sister Doreen were raised on a farm a few miles southeast of Manitou, MB. During the Thirties, the Webber sisters enjoyed happy times growing up on the farm. They attended school in Manitou and one of Ada’s classmates was Basil Howatt, from a neighbouring farm.
Ada and Basil were married on October 11, 1952 and were blessed with 68 years of marriage. They farmed together and raised a family of five.
The focus of Mom’s life was family and farm. She was the glue that held her family together and helped the farm run smoothly.
We remember Mom as a perfectionist, taking extra care in her housekeeping and in her appearance. She was skilled at sewing and knitting. She often sewed our outfits for special occasions, taking care to iron the seams flat and to line up the plaids precisely.
When grandchildren came along, there were knitted sweaters and blankets for each one. Visits to Grandma Howatt’s house meant special treats such as pull-apart buns or peanut butter cookies, and always a storybook to share.
Mom was a lifelong reader and passed on that love of books. As well, Mom supported her children and grandchildren in all of their musical activities, attending many years of festivals, recitals, school and community concerts. She was very proud of her great-grandchildren and cherished their visits, cards and drawings.
Mom and Dad loved to dance and they so enjoyed their many years attending Old Time Dances. Each weekend they would join their dancing friends at a hall in a neighbouring town. They were admired for their smooth style on the dance floor. For a few winters there were trips to Arizona and Las Vegas. The three-day polka marathons were a draw for many Canadians; (the double-hop polka not so elegant, but a definite workout). Mom and Dad cherished the many friendships made during their dancing years.
After their many years in Manitou, Mom and Dad enjoyed new activities and friendships at Homestead South in Morden.
We all felt it was like Mom coming home when she was able to come back to Pembina Manitou Health Centre after her fall and recovery period at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She was so welcomed and cared for by the staff here who had come to know her so well. Even in this time of COVID, we siblings were so thankful to be able to be with Mom at PMHC in her final days.
Ada is survived by her husband, Basil, and their five children: Fay (Tom) Carruthers, Morden; Bill (Mariette) Howatt, Manitou; Barb (Rick) Klippenstein, Caronport, SK; Sheila (Larry) Hemminger, Darlingford; and Grant (Kim) Howatt, Manitou; Grandchildren: Robert, Dan and Brett Carruthers; Catherine (Justin) Reid, Charlie (Kirsty) Howatt, Jesse (Megan) Howatt and Stephen (Delaney) Howatt; Becky (Dwight) Pomedli, Rod (Cheryl) Klippenstein, and Lisa (Justin) Waddington; Brian (Shannon) Hemminger, Callie (Jared) Fofonoff, and Jennie (Chris) Moffatt; Kevin Howatt (Ashley Milin). There are 20 great-grandchildren, aged 2 months to 20 years of age.
She is also survived by her sister Doreen Forrest of Ottawa, ON.
Ada lost her cherished granddaughter Megan Howatt in 2002. She was also pre-deceased by her parents, Bert and Eva, by her sister Elva Tole, and by her brothers-in-law Mervin Tole and Jim Forrest.
A private family service was held at St. Andrew’s United Church, Manitou on Sunday, October 18 with interment at Manitou Cemetery.
