William (Bill) James McKay Henning peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at the age of 92, going on 60.
He is survived by his brothers, Andrew and Pat and a large cadre of nieces and nephews; great and otherwise.
Bill was predeceased by his father, Roy; mother, Jean; brother, Victor and sister, Dallas.
A man of many accomplishments, Bill graduated from University of Alberta (UofA) School of Law in 1951 and was appointed to Queen’s Council in 1968. He practiced commercial law in Edmonton eventually founding the firm Henning, Byrne, Whitmore & McKall in 1992. Bill served on numerous boards including Carling O’Keefe, Victoria & Grey Trust, the Mental Health Appeals Board, was an original board member of the Cross Cancer Institute and legal representative for Standard Life Assurance. Bill was elected to the Edmonton public school board at age 30, to Edmonton city council at 32, served as the president of Edmonton Northlands in 1968, member of the U of A Senate 1992 and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. Bill was politically active at the municipal, provincial and federal levels and a staunch conservative. He was a champion curler, tennis player, jitterbugger and dog giver. Bill’s greatest passion was family, and for him family wasn’t limited to relatives. Bill was our Sunday brunch touchstone, the host and joy of all the best parties. So, here’s to Bill, he’s here at last, here’s to Bill he’s…
