It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Parsons, a proud native of Flatrock, announces his passing after a brief illness, on December 19th 2019, at the age of 64 years. Robert will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Catherine (Kay) and his children, Joanne (Kenny), Jim, Jennifer and his loving grandchildren, Hannah, Jaxon and Nate.
Robert will be fondly remembered by his sister Kathleen and his brothers Carl (Donna), Chris (Kathleen) and Kevin (Denise) and his many nieces and nephews from the Parsons and Houlihan family. Robert was predeceased by his parents Mabel and Kevin and his mother in-law Margaret Houlihan.
Roberts was a true dog lover and he leaves behind his golden retrievers Marley and Oscar. His beloved dogs joined him in his passion for antique cars and where seen many a day in the front seat of his 64 Chev driving out Torbay road.
Robert was destined to be a fisherman the day he first listened to his grandfather’s stories. As a young man he fished with his father Kevin and eventually had his own crew and became a very successful inshore fisherman. With the cod moratorium, Robert turned his attention to the offshore and became a very accomplished crab fisherman carrying on the Parsons fishing tradition.
Robert was proud to be the Chairman of the Flatrock Harbor Authority and was instrumental in getting the facilities in place at the Flatrock breakwater.
Robert was a well-respected “legendary” member of the St John’s fire dept and retired as a captain after 32 years in 2008. The fire department was family to Robert. He followed in his father’s footsteps and the Parsons legacy continues with David his nephew who joined the FD in 2013.
Robert was the “Chief Organizer” for the annual moose hunting trip to Millertown with his friends for 42 years. Everyone knew who the boss was and, like everything else, they respected him for it.
We would like to thank all of those who helped Robert over the past several months including his cousin Dr. Elizabeth Maher and our community nurse Paulette Doyle.
Visitation to take place from Caul’s Funeral Home, Torbay, on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass to take place from St. Michael’s Church, Flatrock on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 10 a.m. with cremation to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Flatrock.
