Obituary for
Margaret Bell Cooper (Burns)
Peacefully in her sleep on 22 December 2019 at 98 years of age. She leaves her three sons Richard (Donna), John (Kim) and Andrew, grandchildren Gillian (Andrew), Geoffrey (Pietro), Nicola (Ben), Loren and Alison and great-granddaughters Milly and Kiah. She was predeceased by her husband EJ (John) Cooper and grandson Ian.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil to Scottish parents, she grew up in Rio de Janeiro where she met her future husband John. She moved to England in 1942 to assist in the war effort working on an Enigma type machine at Bletchley Park. In 1943 she and John, then a Royal Navy Navigating Officer on North Atlantic convoy duty, married during his two day leave.
The family emigrated to Canada in 1953, where John joined the Royal Canadian Navy. Following stays in Montreal and Halifax, the family settled in Ottawa. After their move from the family home to her beloved downtown apartment, Margaret volunteered for many years at the CNIB in the Tech Aids section. She was an avid traveler and a bibliophile, with her family and friends delighting in choosing new books to capture her imagination.
Margaret corresponded all her life with her extended family and friends in the UK and maintained strong and lasting friendships with her Centretown community.
As her niece remarked «I somehow can’t imagine the world without her»
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus and Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital for the wonderful care that Margaret received.A memorial service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 Mcleod Street (at O’Connor) onFriday, January 3, 2020 at 11am followed by a reception in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Chrohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada.
