Thomas, Howard Bertram Dr. MD
Passed away peacefully at the Welland Hospital on Thursday December 5, 2019 in his 89th year. Beloved husband of the late Jacqueline (nee Young 2008). Dear and loving father of Derek Thomas (Sandra) and Lesley Currivan (Andrew). Cherished grandfather of Spencer, Summer, Hunter, Cian, Aiden and great-grandfather to Peyton and Dallas. Dearly missed by his sister Jocelyn Sourant as well as his nieces and nephews in Tilbury, Ontario and Atlanta, Georgia.
After being born in Toronto, Howie spent his school age years in Tilbury. He always had a soft spot in his heart for the small town he was raised in, often calling it “the capital of south western Ontario”. His undergraduate years were in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania where he received his degree from Westminster College. He was a member of the social fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.
After graduation he headed to Montreal where he graduated with a medical degree. He went on to intern at Royal Victoria Hospital, & follow up with a residency in Ophthalmology. During those years he met an R.N, Jackie Young. They were married in 1963 and settled in Fonthill, Ontario. Howie had an ophthalmology practice in Welland for 38 years, where he was much loved by staff & patients, alike.
A special thank you to Lookout Ridge staff and residents for playing a very special part in the later years of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Make A Wish Foundation.
In keeping with Howie’s wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no service at this time.
