Gordon’s Obituary
SPINNEY, Gordon Harris ~ Age 93, of Kingston, Kings Co., passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born on September 10, 1926, in Nicholsville, Kings Co., he was a son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth (Sarsfield) Spinney.
Gordon’s working career span seven decades. Each change in his career path was for the betterment of the family. He began at an early age by hauling supplies to the lumber camp kitchen with a team of oxen graduating to a team of horses and yarding logs for E.R. McMaster & Sons. Then Gordon went on as farm labourer for Lorimer Woodbury. He was also a store clerk and delivery driver at Kingston Trading Company. Gordon then bought a farm in West Paradise. To sustain the farm he took on jobs such as dozer operator, dump truck operator, horse trader, TV antenna installer, and even Coop store manager. After the farm and a new house in Greenwood Square he went onto plumbing, heating and electrical for Western Kings Hardware in Kingston. Next, Gordon spent a brief time as Maintenance Tech at CFB Greenwood, then picking apples in the U.S.A. After doing some plumbing, heating and electrical for E.R. McMaster & Sons, he operated Gordon Spinney Electrical. Gordon finally finished off his working career in the C.E. Electrical Shop at 14 Wing Greenwood. He was a past member of the Kingston Lions Club and attended the Kingston United Church. Gordon loved to go to horse pulls, and touring the countryside and chatting with people.
Surviving are daughter, Nancy (Butch) Emmett, Lawrencetown; sons, Perry (Margaret) Spinney, Daniel Spinney (Joanne Fortin), both of Greenwood; Allison Spinney (Bonnie Monk), Kingston; grandchildren, Tara, Randy, Troy, Jennifer, Christopher, Tyson and Erin; step grandchildren, Brandon, Caleb and Caitlin; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Keddy-Boyd, Laurine (Robert) Baker, both of Greenwood; Linda (Murray) Hird, Trout Lake; brother, Arthur (Janet) Spinney, Berwick; sister-in-law, Beatrice Spinney, Berwick; brother-in-law, Roland Banks, Tremont. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife the former Thelma A. Magee; grandson, Jason Spinney; sister, Shirley Banks; brothers, Graham in infancy and Eugene Spinney.
In keeping with Gordon’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 30, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448 with Rev. Christine Marie Gladu officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will take place in North Kingston Cemetery. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to Western Kings Community Fair, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of ones choice.
