EDWARD CHMELNICKI
May 13, 1931 – December 14, 2019
Peacefully, in the presence of family, Ed passed away on December 14, 2019 at Seven Oaks Hospital.
Left to cherish Ed’s memory are his children Richard Minaker (Donna), Carol Bouttell (Bruce) and Christine Hennigar (David); grandchildren Lisa, Catherine, Melissa (Gavin), Sean, Adam and Cole; great-granddaughters Sable and Violet; and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce; parents Thomas and Anelia; and his brother Tom.
Ed was born and raised in Beausejour, Manitoba. After completing his schooling, he moved to Winnipeg and became an officer with the Winnipeg Police Department. Ed subsequently accepted a position in commercial paper sales which would turn into a very successful career spanning over 50 years. During this period, he developed and maintained numerous long-term relationships with the people he met, and many became not only customers and colleagues but also good friends.
In 1973 Ed married Joyce, who had been widowed with three children, and took on the dual roles of both husband and stepfather. Ed and Joyce would go on to have 42 wonderful years of marriage filled with laughter and many great times with family and friends. Some of Ed’s greatest memories included spending time with the gang at Grand Beach, short trips to Grand Forks and family vacations to California, Florida and Hawaii, and his weekly dinner dates with Joyce at Rae and Jerry’s.
Ed had an avid interest in sports, both as a participant and as a fan. He was a long-time curler and golfer as well as a long-time season ticket holder for the Blue Bombers and the Jets. In his later years, he keenly followed curling, golf, hockey and football on television and was extremely pleased to be able to see the Bombers finally end their long Grey Cup drought.
Ed was a people person and loved to socialize with his many friends and acquaintances but most of all he was an amazing husband, father and grandfather who devoted his life to his family and loved them unconditionally. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and whose lives he touched.
In keeping with Ed’s wishes, no formal service will be held. If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.
