Nadia Sowa 2019

Nadia’s Obituary
Nadia Sowa, beloved wife of the late John Sowa of Danbury, SK, passed away at the Regina General Hospital on October 28, 2019, at the age of 81 years.
Nadia was born on February 15, 1938, in the Danbury District, SK, to Steve Sr. and Katie (Beally) Krywy. She was the youngest child, with three brothers and one sister. Nadia attended and achieved her grade eight education at South Porcupine School, one mile away, and either walked or took the horse as means of transportation. She went on to receive grade nine through correspondence.
Being an animal lover from a young age, Nadia always had a cat or dog by her side. She once got a scolding from her mother, Katie, when she let the cat into the house, tied walnuts to its paws and let the cat run loose. Her father, Steve, laughed extensively and though it was a great joke.
Nadia recalled times were hard and everyone had to pitch in to keep the farm running. There was no running water, power or car. She worked at home, helping on the farm and later got a job at Kozmeniuk’s Store in Danbury, SK. This is where she met the love of her life, John Sowa, and they were married October 11, 1958 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Canora, SK. They lived the winter in a granary on John’s homeplace and in the spring of 1959, they purchased the farmland Nadia continued to reside at until her passing.
Times were often tough, and Nadia worked hard. She raised chickens, ducks, geese, and pigs, but no turkeys! She hated turkeys! She told stories of killing baby turkeys as a little girl because she hated them so much – again, another scolding from her mother, Katie.
Nadia always had a big garden and put away a lot of preserves, sold cream, milk, cottage cheese, and eggs to the neighbours.
Together, John and Nadia mix farmed but predominantly raised beef cattle. They longed for a child and after several miscarriages, they welcomed Carollee into their lives in 1963. Nadia enjoyed spending time with her daughter, driving her to curling and hockey. In 1972, they purchased and moved into their new house. It was such a treat to finally have power, running water, and heat.
Although Nadia really enjoyed a lot of cooking and baking, she still missed her wood stove, as it browned her bread to perfection. She was also an excellent seamstress and sewed much of the family’s clothing, joined a softball team, the Danbury Dynamo, and taught cooking in 4H.
In September 1995, John passed away after losing his battle with cancer. The cattle and the land were rented out, but Nadia continued to reside on the family farm and kept herself busy.
She was an active member of the Norquay United Church Women’s League, kept a big garden and prided herself with many flowers. In the last couple years, Nadia’s health started to decline, yet with the help of her daughter, neighbours, and lifeline responders, she managed to live on the farm until her passing. Remembered for her independence, she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nadia was predeceased by her parents, Steve Sr. and Katie; husband, John; infant son, Matthew; brothers: Jacob, Fred, and Peter; sisters-in-law: Hannah, Lois and Lorette Krywy and Anne Fincaryk; niece, Darlene Fincaryk; nephews: Brent Krywy, Jeff Krywy, Lonnie Sowa, Harold Fincaryk, and Robert Fincaryk; and her brothers-in-law, Albert Folwark and Harry Sowa.
She is survived by her daughter, Carollee; sister, Irene Folwark of Winnipeg, MB; brother-in-law, George (Heather) Sowa of Qualicum Beach, BC; and her sister-in-law, Sonia Sowa of Norquay, SK; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2019, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Nadia Sowa.
