Obituary for
Hendrik Hoekstra
Hendrik (Hank) Hoekstra, aged 71, passed away in his sleep on Friday, November 22, 2019. He was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, to Hendrikje (Henny) (nee ten Brink) and Cornelius Johannes Hoekstra (Kees) on May 29, 1948. The family emigrated to Canada when Hank was 6 years old.
Following high school at Victoria he went on to earn a BEd 1970. He taught in Drayton Valley for five memorable years and then returned to university earning an MEd degree in 1978.
He continued to work at the Faculty of Education as head of the Instructional Media Technology Centre until he retired in 2004.
He enjoyed hiking, biking and sailing, and he volunteered wholeheartedly for the Lions Club. Three days before his passing, he had returned from Mexico where he and Sharon, along with 42 other Lions, distributed eye glasses to needy Mexicans in a five day mission.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Gavin (Julia Lockhart) and daughter, Elaine. He had two grandsons, Sydney and Gilbert. He is also survived by his brother, John (Yvonne); and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews and their families.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverbend United Church 14907 – 45 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB. Cremation has already taken place
