Herb was born in Brigg, England and came to Canada by steam ship in June 1921 at the age of 3. From St. John New Brunswick, he traveled by train to Sunny Nook, Alberta. In 1930 he moved to Endiang, Alberta and on to Clyde Alberta in 1934. Herb joined the army in 1940 and after his training in Kingston, Ontario he was released from service due to poor vision in one eye. Herb then moved to the Kootenays and worked at the Trail smelter from 1941 to 1944. It was there where he meet and married Marjorie Joyce (Maynard) on January 22, 1942. Herb and Marjorie moved to Balfour in 1944 and he started working on the Kootenay Lake Ferry (the Anscomb) in 1947 and retired from there in 1978.
Herb is survived by 3 sons; Art (Dianne) Joyce, Larry (Susan) Brown and Gordon (Ingrid) Brown, grand-daughters Kim, Wendy, Sherry, Lia, Kathleen, Stephanie, Katrina, and grand-sons Art Joyce Jr., Callum and Warren. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and one great great grand daughter.
Funeral services will be held in Balfour at the Covenant Church November 30 at 12 noon with internment to follow at 3pm at the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.
