Shirley Grace MacDonald
Sydney Mines
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, wife, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Grace MacDonald. Shirley passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Northwood Bedford Campus.
Shirley was born on March 30, 1926, in Sydney Mines to the late Purves and Mary (Sharp) MacKeigan. After finishing high school, Shirley took a secretarial course in North Sydney which helped her to get a job with Dr. Davidson, an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. She not only acted as the secretary/receptionist but also assisted the doctor, on many occasions, with his procedures on his patients.
On may 22, 1954, Shirley married her long-time sweetheart, Lloyd, and settled into the MacDonald family home, raising three sons; Douglas, Calvin and David. Shirley was a wonderful baker and cook, with her home always open to family and friends. She served many, many delicious that were filled with love, care and her irresistible desserts, especially her notorious and famous chocolate chip cookies and homemade donuts.
After her children had grown up, Shirley took a job as an office manager in her brother Wally’s dental practice, where she was a great asset and was greatly appreciated for her thoughtfulness and dedication to his patients.
Shirley was a devoted Christian and a dedicated member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where she contributed to many functions with her delicious baked items, and any other help the church would need throughout many years.
After the death of her husband Lloyd, of 61 years, Shirley then moved to Sackville, NS, to live with her son Calvin and his wife Karen. She lived with Calvin for a few years, but after failing health, then moved to Northwood Bedford Campus. She adapted well to her new place, and loved the staff that cared for her, and they, in turn, loved her. Sadly, her health began to fail, and after a grave battle, she peacefully joined her Lord and Saviour.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Douglas (Jo-Anne), Sydney Mines, Calvin (Karen), Sackville, and David, Sydney, five grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew, Justin, Ryan and Hannah, and eight great-grandchildren, MacKayla, Hunter, Alaina, Brayden, Owen, Nathan, Halle and Brody. Also left to mourn are her sisters Gladys, Toronto, Constance (Murdock), Dartmouth, and brother Dr. Wallace MacKeigan (Anne), Sydney Mines.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband Lloyd, and an infant son.
Visitation for Shirley MacDonald will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 7-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main St., Sydney Mines. The funeral service will take place on Sunday, at 2 pm in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Queen St., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating. Donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
