Sandra Lynn Heal (nee Wodinsky) was born on 29th May, 1948 and died on Thursday, 17th October, 2019 due to complications after a long battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband, Steve Heal. She will be greatly missed by her children Jennifer (Glen Fraser) and Andrew and her grandchildren Ana and Callum. Sandy was very dedicated to and proud of her children and grandchildren, and was a cherished mother and grandmother.
Sandy was born and raised in Armstrong, where she attended and graduated school. In Grade 10 (1965) she started dating Steve, and in 1967 they were married and had their first child. In 1966 she was crowned Miss Armstrong, so Steve was a lucky fellow indeed. They were both very active members of Teen Town in the Armstong-Vernon area, organising various activities for teens. Steve was so lucky to have a patient and dedicated wife.
Sandy worked for many many years at Shuswap Optometric Centre, and has countless fond memories of her work and her work associates, who became good friends. Sandy loved the ocean, and particularly ocean beaches. When she moved to Qualicum Beach in 2005 she began to frequent the local beaches, and knew where to find geoducks, sea lions, and the best spots for oceanside picnics. Sandra was a costume expert, as evidenced by many, many theme parties as well as her role as costume mistress for countless theatre productions, most directed by Steve, for Shuswap Theatre and for middle and high schools in Salmon Arm. Steve’s productions were made more authentic due to Sandy’s amazing attention to detail and understanding of the eras. Sandy’s dedication to the arts continued in Qualicum, where she volunteered in different capacities at The Old School House Art Centre.
Sandy was a consummate hostess who passed her love of cooking on to both of her children. She shared her heart through food. She was a typical Ukranian grandma in this way, and came by this honestly through her own mother’s love of cooking. Her grandchildren always looked forward to going to grandma’s so that they could have cookies and pie for breakfast. Sandy loved her trips to Southeast Asia in the last 13 years. She made the long journey annually until illness prevented her from doing so in the last couple of years. Sandy loved her trips, and spent lots of time swimming, cooking, reading, and enjoying not being in the rainy, cold, Westcoast winters. She did manage to make one last trip in 2018 to see her granddaughter Ana graduate from high school in Malaysia. She very much enjoyed acting as a tour guide to one of her favourite places, which was Penang, Malaysia. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Canary Foundation. canaryfoundation.org
