It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ruby Charlotte
Mercer (nee Thorne from New Harbour). Ruby passed away peacefully, surrounded by
family at Carbonear General Hospital on October 29th, 2019 at the age of 83.
She was predeceased by parents George and Mae Thorne, grandmother Melinda Thorne,
beloved husband of 58 years Emerson Mercer, son George Mercer, grandson Stephen
Hillier and son in law Harve Hillier.
Left to celebrate her life are daughters Maxine, Brenda, Lois (John), Sandra, Darlene,
Lorraine (Kevin) and son Don (Tina), 19 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a large
circle of extended family and friends.
Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an avid reader, a
talented knitter and a longtime member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association
(LOBA). Ruby loved being outdoors, camping, gardening and spending time on the beach.
She loved her cats and playing cards with family, but what brought her the most joy was
spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Carbonear General Hospital for their
kindness and compassion in Ruby’s final days.
