Mary’s Obituary
Mary Mitten, beloved wife of the late Archie Mitten, passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on October 16, 2019, at the age of 88 years.
Mary was born on June 26, 1931, to Elmer and Luella (Fach) Tuomainen in Watrous, SK. The oldest of five siblings, she attended school in Watrous until she moved to the convent in Saskatoon, SK, where she furthered her education and obtained her degree in education. Following her schooling, Mary had the opportunity to become a nanny for a family in the USA, so she courageously made the move to San Francisco, California. Upon her return to Canada, she met Archie Mitten and they were married on September 28, 1954, in Watrous, SK. Mary and Archie were blessed with seven children: Dianne, Kyle, Wendy, Marla, Barbara, Josslyn and James. Over the years, due to the nature of Archie’s work, the family moved extensively throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Wherever they lived, Mary’s faith and dedication lead her to belong to numerous clubs and organizations, especially through the church and CWL. She loved the church, became a devoted member of the choir, served as choir director, altar server, and stayed active in Bible studies, Sunday School, committees and groups. She also held integral positions as a lay minister and catechism teacher.
Outside of the church, Mary was an active community member who loved curling, both participating and watching; she also enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking and canning. There were always good eats at Mary Mitten’s. A woman of many talents, Mary liked to draw, doodle, knit and crochet. She loved reading, especially history books, and would have made an exceptional history teacher. She also held a special place in her heart for animals. Her favourites were Kizy, the dog, and Percy and Lardie, the cockatiel birds. She also had numerous cats but was especially fond of Poopitz.
Mary will be remembered for many remarkable accomplishments throughout her life, one being purchasing her very own first car at 82 years of age. Above all, Mary’s greatest achievement, and what brought her the most pride and joy, was her family who she loved dearly. She will be surely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Elmer and Luella; husband, Archie; brothers, William and David; sister, Dora; her daughter, Josslyn and son-in-law, Jim White.
She is survived by her sons, Kyle (Fiona) and James (Laurie); daughters: Dianne (Richard), Wendy, Marla, and Barbara (Dave); her treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley (Jim); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Vigil of Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 21, 2019, and Funeral Mass celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2019, with both services through St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Canora, SK. Rite of Committal will follow in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to a Charity of Donor’s Choice, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mary Mitten.
