Mark Robert Dover
Dover, Dr. Mark Robert – November 20, 1927-October 27, 2019
Dr. Mark R. Dover, beloved husband, lifemate and best friend of Nina for 66 years, cherished Father of Howard, Dr. Jeffrey (Dr. Tania Phillips), and Dr. Karen Dover, adored Poppa of Sophie and Isabel (Ari), and of Sacha, Bronte, Mia, Nino, and their Dad, Jean-Claude Terrettaz, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27th, 2019 in his 92nd year. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob B. and Bertha Dover, and his dear sister, Buddy Kizell. He leaves behind his treasured nieces and nephews, and special cousins, all of whom were indelibly touched by his gentle kindness, unyielding integrity, deep wisdom, and sublime humour. He was a gentleman and a scholar in the purest sense, a true statesman of the highest standards, a man of dignity, elegance, grace, and humility.
He graduated the University of Ottawa, School of Medicine, in 1955 as Class President, continued with Postgraduate Surgical training in Brooklyn NY, and earned Diplomacy to the American Board of Surgery, and Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCS). He established a successful and highly-regarded General Surgical Practice based at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, where he was elected President of the Medical Staff. He became an Associate Professor of Surgery, and ultimately held the position of the Chief of the Department of General Surgery at the University of Ottawa (1984-93). Throughout this period, he was chosen as an Annual Examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. His selection as the Assistant Dean of Medicine at the University of Ottawa (1993-97) was a relished appointment, as was a coveted election to the Senate of the University of Ottawa. Throughout his outstanding medical career, Dr. Dover’s human touch and his respect for his patients and the trust that they had instilled in him was his driving force. He was truly honoured to care for people, and his sincerity shone through to his last days.
On a more personal note, he was an avid athlete, with a love of skiing, golfing, fishing, and boating as the Captain of the Dover Soul. He adored life, loved his friends and family, enjoyed armchair politics and a good stiff Scotch…or the perfect Martini, coupled with a good belly laugh. A sweet Jazz tune made him swoon, as did a traditional Turkey feast. Oh, he will be greatly missed by so many….
Deepest gratitude to Judith Rana and Jerald Bona for their exemplary care, as well as the entire staff at Hillel Lodge.
