Joseph Peter Hrubizna
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Joseph Peter Hrubizna (Joe). He will be lovingly remembered and missed after passing away peacefully at home in Edmonton on October 19, 2019 at the age of 93 years.
Born on February 3, 1926, in Czechoslovakia, his humble beginnings began in Canada at age of 4 and remained with him all throughout life as he transitioned to humble endings. After many struggles in his formative years, his adult life began in training as a para-trooper in the army. He had some duties in Canada but was fortunate enough to see WWII come to an end before he otherwise might have been deployed.
He then went on to marry Mildred who was his loving wife until her death in 2012. He worked at the post office and soon his natural talents of being self-taught shone through. His brilliant business mind led him to educate himself through all the levels of real estate. For some time, he worked at Webber Bros. where he was greatly respected for his honesty and integrity in his business dealings. He quickly rose through the ranks of residential real estate to his specialty of commercial real estate. Here he shone for many years and won many awards.
His excellence in being self-taught led him to further broaden his horizons in investment skills. He loved to “play” the stock market and had a passion for excellence. His skills proved, throughout life, to outshine the professionals with formal training. Joe was a man of all trades. He built 2 homes of his own with Mildred’s help, maintained his cars, and fixed up everything and anything! As if that was not enough, he always tried to find time to help others with their projects. His ongoing skills never seemed to end.
Joe and Mildred enjoyed travelling much of the world as well as enjoying the nature-like acreage where they both worked so hard to build their lovely and final home. They also shared their desires for generosity in giving to others. They touched the lives of many, trying to bring joy to family and lighten their loads. This was extended to others in need such as animal and nature causes, health and medical causes, music and the arts, poverty, and so on.
Joe remained active in various activities for 93 years!
Joe is predeceased by his loving wife, Mildred; his sister, Ann Rocque; brother, John; and parents. Joe is survived by the following, daughters, Lynda and Dianne; son, Kevin (Anna Maria); grand-daughter, Tina Guthrie (James) and their children, Jacqueline and Dylan – great-grandchildren; grand-daughter, Cindy and children, Shawna and Ty – great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Roland Rocque; and many nieces and nephews.
Prayers will be held on Sunday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 10825 – 97 Street, Edmonton. Funeral Mass Monday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Joe Hrubizna’s name would be much appreciated to help carry on his life-time generosity, to a charity near and dear to your hearts!
JACQUELINE and DYLAN, great-grandchildren, would like to add the following:
Jacqueline and Dylan fondly remember their many visits with great-grandpa, commenting on how funny, smart and likeable he was.
Jacqueline reminisces that great-grandpa was the only one who she didn’t mind calling her Jackie!
Dylan will miss him and he recalls all the cool black-and-white movies great-grandpa used to watch.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Joseph Peter
