Jean Hatlen 2019

Obituary for
Jean Hatlen
Jean Juanita Hatlen passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years in Edmonton, Alberta on
Sunday, October 13, 2019.
Born on October 22, 1929 in Hanna, Alberta to Bob and Lou Frakes, Jean grew up by the Simonette River near Crooked Creek. In 1954, she married Ken Hatlen in Edson, where they raised their family. Jean was predeceased by her parents; brother, Patrick; husband, Ken; and son, Kenny. She is survived by her sisters ,Betty and Clara; daughters, Melora (Mike), Dolores, and Kathy (Peter); grandchildren, Kassandra, Patricia, Christopher, Abigail, Bethany, Jasmine, and Spencer; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jean was a self-motivated and community-minded woman with a passion for teaching and preserving history. She received a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and was a Social Studies teacher for over 30 years. After she retired from teaching, she spent 15 years as a Councillor for the Town of Edson. During this time, as a founding member of the Edson Cultural Heritage Organization, Jean spearheaded projects to preserve precious community heirlooms – notably the Red Brick School (now the Red Brick Arts Centre, which named the Jean Hatlen Theatre in her honour) and the Galloway Station (now the Galloway Station Museum & Travel Centre). She also served on the boards of both institutions. Jean was an active and well-respected member of the Edson community, and her legacy will live on for many years to come.
Jean had a deep connection with nature and animals and found great pleasure in gardening and bird watching. She also enjoyed travelling and playing Bridge and The Train Game with her friends. Throughout her life, she was devoted to self-education and was an avid reader who loved to debate politics. Among many other qualities, Jean will be remembered for her witty sense of humour, infinite wisdom, infectious laugh, strong-willed tenacity, and selfless pursuits. She will be missed dearly.
Our family is grateful for everyone who was a part of Jean’s life. Special thanks to Ann Steffes and Monique Joly for their loyal friendship and loving kindness.
As per Jean’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Her ashes will be spread at the Simonette River at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, and in loving memory of Jean, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Jean
