SHERIDAN (Snow) Jean Marie
Passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2019. Jean Sheridan in her 81st year. Born in Digby, Nova Scotia, to Vincent and Venetta Snow. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Harold Sheridan. She leaves 4 children Mary, Jim (Lisa), Janet (Graham) and Heather (Shawn), 6 precious grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She also leaves her brother Gordon (Norma) Snow, sister Margaret Warnell of N.S., sister-in-law Jean Snow of B.C., brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Doreen Sheridan of Brockville, and brother-in-law Herb Sheridan of Brockville. She was predeceased by her brother Donald Snow, brother-in-law Ronald Warnell, and sister-in-law Sheila Sheridan.
Jean graduated from Mount Allison University (Class of ’59). After graduation, Jean travelled by ship to London, England, with several girlfriends. She shared a flat in the city with them, found work, and spent weekends and holidays hitchhiking throughout Europe. Upon her return, she married her university sweetheart Harold and moved to Brockville, Ontario, then to Prescott, Ontario, where they raised their family.
Jean loved to entertain and cook for family and friends (and often complete strangers!) at their home, Thorn Hedge Place. She created wonderful memories for her children and others, hosting bonfires and ice skating parties on the property’s riverfront, Christmas parties, pig roasts, and maple syrup making gatherings.
As a young wife and mother, Jean started her lifelong commitment to volunteering in her community and church. She was actively involved in the Canadian Federation of University Women, a number of boards, committee and leadership positions at Wall St. United Church and at regional United Church of Canada bodies, and Loaves and Fishes. She served on the Board of Governors of St. Lawrence College and as Chair of the United Way of Leeds and Grenville.
As a true Bluenoser, Jean loved her home province of Nova Scotia and spent every summer and many other holidays in the Digby/Bear River area. The family has many happy memories of family picnics at Sandy Cove, walks at Mavillette Beach and sunsets at Culloden.
Jean was adventurous, an avid journal, letter writer and reader, a lover of sweet treats and everything seafood, and embraced life to the fullest.
A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held in Brockville at Wall St. United Church, 5 Wall Street, Brockville on Monday, October 28th at 11 a.m.
