Gerald Ross
1935-2019
Gerald Ross, age 84, of Trenton, passed away Monday,
September 30, 2019, in the Valley View Villa.
You might remember Gerald Ross as the guy who fixed your TV,
or maybe even your radio, back when we still repaired these things.
Or, maybe you knew him at the Steelworks, where he worked as an
electrician for many years. You may have known him at his cottage on
Lochaber Lake. Those were good times to know Dad, and see his smiling
face.
The last few years have been tougher. He developed
Alzheimer’s disease and had many troubles of aging. He hung in there
though, and usually could summon a smile even on the hardest of
days.
He was descended from good strong Scottish people. Richard
Ross and Jannitt (Dalles) Ross came from Dyke, Scotland to Nova Scotia
in 1834. They settled at Big Gut (appropriate for this son), and the
Ross family has been in Trenton ever since. Dad lived here his whole
life and was very dedicated to the town. He belonged to the volunteer
fire department and was an original member of the Trenton Athletic
Association (TAA). He belonged to the United Church, High St.
Trenton.
I don’t think Dad would be overly concerned about donations.
He didn’t worry about money. (I should also mention that he was the
most honest man I have ever known.) He would probably rather if you
did a good deed for someone – especially somebody who needed a little
help.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Muriel (Barter); daughters:
Joyce Ross, Linwood; Carol Stewart, Trenton; sons: Billy, Delta, ON;
and John, Lyons Brook; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren,
and one great-great grandson. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary
Chapman (Ross); grandparents: Richard and Ruth Ross; son, Richard; and
grandson, Abe MacKinnon.
Dad received excellent care at the Valley View Villa. The
entire staff is wonderful. They are the most caring and considerate
people you will ever meet. If I filled this paper with stories of
their empathy, and kindness, it would still not be
enough. They are angels of love and compassion.
Thank you all. He also received great care at Aberdeen Hospital, and
from all health care workers that helped him along the
way.
Visitation 7-9 pm Thursday, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home,
73 High St., Trenton, from where funeral service will be held at 11 am
Friday. Reception to follow in First United Church Hall. Burial will
be in Hillside Cemetery.
