FERNANDO ANTHONY FERN VIOLA October 22 1926 October 14 2019

VIOLA, Fernando Anthony (Fern)
October 22, 1926 – October 14, 2019
After a long and courageous battle with kidney disease and surrounded by his loving family, Fernando was called to
the Lord to join his beloved wife of 67 years Josephine (nee Macaluso). Fernando was in his 93rd year. Loving father
of Rocco (Tina), Maria (Alex) and Pamela. Adored Nonno of Michael (Erica), Matthew (Alexandrea) Christina (Nick)
Christopher (Nicole), and Michael. Loving great-grandfather of Nicholas, Dominic, Alexandra and Alessia. Predeceased
by his parents Rocco and Maria Carmine Viola and his siblings and their spouses. Fernando was a loving uncle to
many nieces and nephews.
A loving father and grandfather, Fernando lived his daily life demonstrating his great faith in God, his unconditional
love for his family, his work ethic, his generosity, patience and kindness to those who knew him. Fernando’s life was
one of service to God, country and community. A lifelong member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish and the church
choir for over 75 years. Fernando sang weekly at Sunday mass, on special feast days and often by request at many
funerals and weddings. His rendition of religious hymns were truly inspirational. Fernando was a proud Canadian
and an excellent ambassador for the Hamilton community. In the 1950’s, he and his loving wife Josie helped served
the needs of a growing Italian community through his generosity and support as a grocer and butcher on Sherman
Ave. Asked by the Honourable John Munro to serve as his executive assistant he embarked on a new career in federal
politics in 1971. During the 1970’s and early 80’s Fernando assisted John Munro to serve the constituent needs of
Hamilton East. During this period Fernando added the national anthem to his musical repertoire. So associated with
the national anthem the late Prime Minister Elliot Trudeau dubbed him « Mr. O Canada. » Fernando drew from his
musical talents and performed at many concerts in order to raise funds for many charities near and dear to his heart.
Fernando’s life was full and he certainly did it his way. He worked at Veterans Affairs for over 30 years assisting
veterans with their pensions until he retired at age 87. His contributions to his community and our veterans whom he
dearly loved and respected earned Fernando many recognitions of distinction. Fernando was a past president and
proud member of The Canadian Club, the Honourary Chairperson for Festitalia 2016 – 2017, a proud recipient of the
Festitalia Heritage Award in 2015, a member of the Gagliano Aeterno Club, the Sertoma Club, the Federazione
d’Abruzzese, the Fratellanza Racalmutese Club, a proud supporter of the CYO, and the Friends of the Haida. A
lifelong member of the Sons of Italy, Fernando was honoured by the Sons of Italy in 2006 as their Hamilton Italian-
Canadian Citizen of the Year. He received the Wenonah Foster Award for his support of our Veterans. In 2012,
Fernando was truly humbled and honoured to receive the distinctive Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal that truly
reflected a culmination of his many years of dedication and commitment to his community and country. Fernando
was truly a wonderful family man. In his later years, even as his health was failing, he devoted his energy and time to
care for his loving wife Josephine until her death in 2017. Fernando was a loving father, mentor and Catholic role
model for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fernando’s family want to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Rossano Allega, Dr. Karen To, Dr. Bryan Alton, the
dialysis teams at St. Joseph Hospital, his friends and the staff at the King Street Dialysis Centre and to the wonderful
staff of Complex Care in the Juravinski Tower 8th floor for their compassionate care over the past two years.
Visitation will be at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton St. E. (near James) on Thursday from 1-5 p.m. and 6-9
p.m. with Vigil prayers at 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Friday, October 18,
2019 at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington. Donations to St. Josephs Health Care
(Complex Care or Nephrology Department) and St. Anthony of Padua building Fund would be greatly appreciated by the
family. »Well done good and faithful servant; you have shown you are trustworthy in the small things, I will trust you
with greater, come and share in your master’s happiness. » Matthew 25:2
