La célébration de
Elfriede Ilse Charlotte Palme
3 juillet 1925 –
6 octobre 2019
Passed away peacefully after a short stay at Queens Garden Long Term Care Facility, Hamilton on Sunday October 6, 2019. She lived a full life spanning 94 years. Elfriede was born on July 3, 1925 in Brandenburg, Germany. There she met her future husband, Edgar, and they were married in May of 1944. During the onset of the Russian occupation in East Germany, she fled with her husband and first child, Christel, to a town in the Bavarian Alps in Southern Germany. There she gave birth to Renate, Rosemarie and Hartmut.
In 1957 the family emigrated to Toronto, Canada because of the volatile political situation in Europe in the hope of a safe future for the family. Starting a new life in a foreign country presented many hardships. The language barrier made it difficult to find a suitable job in her field. It was the beginning of many years of hard work and many sacrifices for the family. The cottage in Muskoka, acquired in the early 1960’s, provided a natural sanctuary from city life for the whole family. To this day the cottage remains a meaningful meeting place for the children, the grandchildren and the greatgrandchildren.
The connection to her home country was kept alive by many trips to visit her daughters, Rosemarie and Renate, who had moved back to Germany. A trip to the East Coast with her husband in a Volkswagen Camper was a memorable highlight. The early passing of her husband, Edgar, in 1989 marked a change in her life. It gave her the impulse to walk her own path by becoming an active member of the Agincourt Baptist Church. New spiritual connections and friendships were made. At the same time, the love for her growing family remained the central focus. She was very proud of her seven grandchildren and thirteen greatgrandchildren and showed an unwavering interest in their lives.
Living 35 years in the multicultural apartment building in Scarborough advanced her to the status of mother and grandma to many new immigrants and refugees. Her 90th Birthday celebration was an occasion for her family and many friends to show their love and appreciation for her warmth and kindness.
Elfriede Palme’s Obituary would not be complete without mentioning her great love for animals and nature.
She truly will be missed by her entire extended family and everyone whose lives she touched.
A celebration of Elfriede’s life will take place at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 1010 Botanical Drive, BURLINGTON (905-527-0405) on Sunday, October 20th, 2019 at 11:00 am.
If so desired, donations can be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Please sign the online Book of Condolences.
