In Loving Memory Of
Stanley Edwin Sather
Stanley Edwin Sather, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Wanham, AB, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 92 years.
Stan was born in Lacombe, AB, to Mary and Emil Sather on September 25, 1926. When he was 14 months old his family moved to Peoria to homestead there. The family purchased a quarter of land in Wanham, and moved there in 1944. Stan signed up for the army during WWII but the war ended before he was sent to Europe, and he returned home for the harvest. In 1948 Stan married Florence Ayling and settled on the family farm. Stan, along with other family members formed Langnes Co-operative Farm in 1962. He continued on the farm raising his three children, until he retired from full time farming in 1996. After Florence passed away in 1984, Stan married Jessie Sawers in 1986 and his family grew with the addition of Jessie’s two daughters. Stan and Jessie lived on the farm until they moved to a condo in Grande Prairie in 2012, where Stan lived until his passing.
Stan was a gentle soul, a kind and caring man who had a very deep Christian faith, which guided his life. Stan’s life was committed to his church, family, farm, and community. He worked hard all of his life to care for his family, to enhance his community, to contribute to a successful family farm, and dedicate time to his church. He was always willing to help whenever and wherever needed. Throughout his life and even in his last days, Stan shared his wonderful smile with everyone!
Stan loved to have any opportunity to share life with his family and friends. He enjoyed curling, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, skating, fishing, and golfing. Camping and travelling, especially his trip to Norway to explore his heritage, were treasured experiences. He loved the many hours he spent restoring antique tractors and farm equipment and developing the Grizzly Bear Museum in Wanham. He enjoyed competing in the local and Canadian Plowing Matches, as well as contributing many hours to help run the Wanham Provincial Plowing Matches. Music was always a special part of his life, from singing in the choir, to playing his guitar and mandolin, to jamming with friends, and enjoying any opportunity to listen to others play and sing.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Jessie Sather; his children: Barry (Janice) Sather, Karen (Joss) Binns, and Doug (Cathy) Sather; step-children: Debra Olson, and Sandy (Terry) Shmyr; grandchildren: Travis (Lisa) Sather, Scott (Sarah) Sather, Jenna (Brenin) Rycroft, Kirsti Binns (Jesse Russell), Sara Binns, Jena Olson, Eric Olson, Melissa (Sheldon) Giacobbo, Malorie (Lindsay) Shmyr; great-grandchildren: Rachel and Kellen Sather; Reese, Nolan, and Staylee Sather; Dexter and Rio Rycroft; Oscar Russell-Binns; Kennedy, Cadence, and Gabriel Olson; and Ava and Angelo Giacobbo.
Stan was predeceased by his parents Mary and Emil Sather; first wife, Florence Sather; brothers Harold and Sam; son in-law Bruce Olson; grandchildren André Sather, and Jessie Olson; as well as many cherished extended family members.
A Service of Remembrance will take place on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 11:00am at Forbes Presbyterian Church in Grande Prairie (9635 76 Ave.). Following the service, a reception will be held at the church. With interment to follow at Wanham Cemetery.
