Roger Edward Acreman
1942-2019
Colonel Roger Edward Acreman OMM CD passed away September 24,
2019 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born 27 January 1942 in
Cuckfield Sus, England he was the son of the late Major Douglas
Edward Acreman and Mrs. Barbara Acreman (nee Vickers). Roger was
predeceased by his brother Robert Austin Acreman.
Roger is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 55
years Nancy (nee Ross), two adult children Graham (Lenka) and Robin
Corey (Shawn), six talented grandchildren: Jillian Acreman (Matt
Carr), Douglas Acreman (Lauren Scott), Nolan, Regan, twins Max and
Zoë and great granddaughters Addison and
Violet.
The son of a WW II veteran and career soldier, Roger was
educated in various parts of Canada, notably North Vancouver, Calgary
and Montreal. Roger joined the Canadian Army (Militia) in
1958 as a private with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. He
transferred to the Canadian Army (Regular) in 1961 as an officer
cadet. He retired in 1997 as a colonel having served as a
Strathcona and as a Dragoon in various parts of Canada and overseas
including two tours in the Federal Republic of Germany and four years
in the Republic of Korea as the Defence Attaché, Canadian
Member of the Military Armistice Commission, and Canadian Liaison
Officer to the United Nations Command. Roger loved the
military profession and considered it a privilege and honour to
follow, lead and work with the best soldiers in the
world.
Following retirement and for ten years, Roger helped Nancy
operate a bed and breakfast aptly named The Colonel’s In
B&B. During this period Roger also served as the
provincial director of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and
completed a BA degree, which he jokingly referred to as « my 40
year project », from the University of Manitoba. Roger
was active in the Fredericton Garrison Club and Fredericton Golden
Club for many years and served as president of both
organizations. He was also a member of the board of two PC
NB riding associations and volunteered with various tourism
associations. Roger was a proud recipient of the
Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals.
Roger enjoyed politics, history, genealogy, writing,
education and fitness training.
In accordance with Roger’s wishes there will be a
private family service. Those who would like to pay their respects are
cordially invited to meet with the family on Friday, September 27,
2019 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at The Picaroons Roundhouse
located at 912 Union Street to share recollections and to celebrate a
life well lived.
In lieu of donations, Roger asked that you perform an
anonymous act of kindness towards a stranger.
