It is with great sadness that the family of Omer Kenneth Sather announces his passing on the 23 of September 2019 at the age of 83.
Omer was born on the farm near Hatfield, Saskatchewan March 6, 1936 to Ole and Mabel Sather.
He is survived by his soul mate and wife Anne Sather and their three daughters: Rhonda (Randy Murray) of Lloydminster, Glenna (Jim Curry) of Regina and Leanne (Tim Fell) of St Albert. His grandchildren: McKayla Curry, Braden Curry, Haley Fell, Austin Fell and Mila Fell. He also leaves behind his brother Wayne, sister-in-law Irene, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Ole and Mabel Sather, siblings: Arnold , Haldis Hancock, Birger (Bud), Cliff and Rolph. Sisters in law: Irene , Elaine , Marguerite, Norma and Ailleen and his brother in law: Lorne.
He will be remembered for his kind and gentle ways not just to his family but to anyone he came into contact with. He loved sports and games. Retiring at 54 gave him many years of recreation and fun. Even though he spent 35 years in banking, it was his first years on the farm that set the tone for his morals and values. While always competitive at whatever he played, he was gracious both winning and losing! That may have come from growing up with 6 siblings.
Over the years Omer and Anne lived in many communities during which time they made lasting friends and many memories. His 3 daughters were not always enthusiastic with the news of a transfer but appreciated the new experiences in the long run.
Camping was high on the priority list for summer. Creating bonds and learning to work together made memories that have outlasted the trips. Dad started camping at a young age with his parents. As he grew up it was camping with his brothers and sister in Waskesui, then with his wife and family and finally, on to exploring as far as Mexico in retirement. Mom didn’t start out loving camping (think wet canvas) but soon grew to love it too. His 3 girls and grandchildren inherited that same love of camping and campfires.
Omer was green before it was cool to be green. Composting was our life as children even though our neighbors questioned what that mound in the back yard was for. Walking to and from work made it hard for his daughters to beg for a ride to school when he was walking rain or shine. Of course, it took him much less time to go twice as far with his distinctive long legged stride!
On the subject of green, he was born in Saskatchewan so it should come as no surprise to any one that he was a Roughrider fan through and through. Years ago he would listen to games while stretched out on the floor with his head by the radio. He was still watching them on TV only a couple of weeks ago.
Sports were his favourite way to spend his free time from curling in the winters and golfing in the summer to bowling, pool, darts, shuffle board to name only a few. He had a lot more fun winning all those trophies than we did dusting them! He remained a deadly crib player to the end, knowing which card to throw in the crib and how to count his hand even when he struggled to remember what colour he was on the scoreboard. His pool game didn’t waiver either. His last game was only a week before his death at the St Albert Retirement Residence where Mom and Dad have lived for the last year.
His daughters and grandchildren remember his patience when he would teach them a new task or skill. Any father who could teach all 3 daughters how to drive a standard must have had infinite patience!
When you think of Omer remember his kind and gentle soul, his sense of humour, his never ending patience, honesty and loyalty, his love of sports along with his competitive nature, his love of nature and most of all his love of you: his family and friends.
The Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Society are charities with significance to Omer should anyone wish to make a donation.
