Memorial Donation
Shortly after celebrating his 100th birthday, Leonard Clarke passed peacefully away on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Chancellor Park, St. John’s.
Born in Victoria, NL he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 72 years, Doris, his parents Leonard and Katherine Clarke, his brothers William (Bill) and Harold (Leah), his sisters Sadie Clarke and May (Tom) Forward, brother-in-law Matthew (Violet) Moores and nephew Leonard Forward .
Leonard leaves behind nieces Doreen (Greg) Stokes, Pamela (Hughie) Turpin, Doris Hussey, Karen Slade, Linda (Jim) Callahan, Margaret Newhook, Sandra (Frank) Clarke; and nephews Ron (Judy) Moores; Leonard Clarke, David (Doris Walsh) Clarke and Allan (Judith) Forward, Tommy (Rosie) Forward and Rodney (Rebecca) Forward, niece Holly (Leonard) Forward, special nephew Johnny Clarke, sister-in-law Joyce (Roy) Slade as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends He will also be fondly remembered by his many loyal employees.
Leonard moved to Bell Island with his brother, Bill (Minnie), wife Doris and her brother Matthew (Violet) to start what would eventually become Clarke and Clarke Ltd, still in operation today. Leonard and Doris never had children of their own, but they doted endlessly on their nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, never forgetting a birthday and celebrating their every milestone.
Leonard and Doris traveled the world, but especially loved Doris’s family home in Blackhead. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing and trouting with his brothers and cousins and beloved hunting dogs. It was his lifelong hobby and food staple. Leonard remained active well into his late 90’s, driving back and forth between Bell Island and Blackhead with Doris.
Leonard was a generous supporter of the Bell Island Boys and Girls Club, as he believed a child’s best shot at life was education, sport and recreation. He provided substantial bequests to students pursuing post-secondary
education. This generosity will be extended with his passing
Visitation to take place at Pendergast’s Funeral Home, Bell Island, on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 2-4 & 6-8. Memorial Service to take place at Caul’s Chapel, St John’s, at 2:00 PM on October 2, 2019. Inurnment following
the service at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
