John Alward QC
1930-2019
After a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer, John died
peacefully at Hospice House in Fredericton, New Brunswick, at the age
of 89. The youngest child of Dorothy Alma Alward (née
Blizard) and W. Wallace Alward, he grew up in the Mount Pleasant
neighbourhood of Saint John and attended Winter Street School and
Saint John High before earning his BA at the University of New
Brunswick in 1951. He studied law at Dalhousie University and, in
1956, joined the Halifax law firm Daley, Ritchie, Black &
Moreira. He practiced for 50 years, mentoring many younger lawyers who
recall him with respect and affection, and in 2004-2005, he was named
Honorary President of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. A
long-time reservist, he held various positions in the Canadian Armed
Forces (Militia), including Commanding Officer of the 1st
(Halifax-Dartmouth) Field Artillery Regiment, President of the Royal
Canadian Artillery Association, Chair of the Conference of Defense
Associations, President of the Royal United Services Institute of Nova
Scotia, Honorary ADC to the Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia and, most
recently, Honorary Colonel of the 1st (Halifax-Dartmouth) Field
Artillery Regiment. He was also actively involved with the Canadian
National Institute for the Blind (chairing the Maritime Division and
National Library Board) and King’s College (serving on the
Board of Governors). John was an avid golfer, playing as a young boy
with his father at Westfield and Riverside in Saint John and for many
years as a member of Ashburn in Halifax. In 2015, he moved home to New
Brunswick, taking up residence at Farraline Place in Fredericton,
where he embraced his late eighties with his usual good humour and
grace.
He is predeceased by his parents; his brother, Peter, and
sister, Prudence; and his ex-wife, Judith. He is survived by his three
children, Lisa Alward (John Ball) of Fredericton, Peter Alward of
Saskatoon, and Gavin Alward (Mary) of Halifax, as well as his six
cherished grandchildren, Hilary, Jack, and Peter Ball, Theo
Crane-Alward, and Olivia and Emily Alward, and his great-grandson,
Caleb Alward. Also by his six nephews and nieces, Marc and Dominique,
and John, Dawn, Melinda, and Julia. He will be remembered for his
sunny disposition, his quick wit, his love of family and his
integrity.
A celebration of John’s life will take place in
Fredericton on March 2020. His name will be added to the Alward family
stone in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John. We are very grateful for the
care he received from his nurses in his final days. In lieu of
flowers, donations to Farraline Place or Hospice House would be much
appreciated.
