Don spent his early life in Bentley, Innisfail and Red Deer, Alberta. Shortly after graduating high school, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force flying aircraft on anti-submarine patrols off the east coast of Canada from 1942-45.
He obtained his BSc. degree in Geology at University of Alberta (1951), where he met his bride Bernice Eshpeter, marrying in 1951. He worked summers for Imperial Oil from 1948-1950 and joined Mobil Oil in 1951 where he and his industry colleagues helped build Alberta’s energy industry. He retired from Mobil in 1986 after a successful and rewarding 35-year career.
Don was a family man and loved his home, especially his garden. He was an avid curler and enjoyed retired life. His love of poetry was legendary, reciting everything from Horatius at the Bridge to works from Wordsworth, Kipling, Coleridge and Browning. His favorite poet was Robert Service and all his children grew up knowing the story of Sam McGee! After retirement he and Bernice had fun on a number of cruises and many trips to see the world. He will be dearly missed and remain forever in our hearts.
