Hartung, David
1940 – 2019
Dave Hartung passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, and into the arms of his loving Savior on September 18, 2019 at the Vulcan Community Heath Care Center. Dave bravely fought pancreatic cancer over the past 38 months, an amazing milestone considering the type of cancer he had. Dave was born in Carmangay on December 29, 1940. He was the third of four children born to his parents Alexander and Amelia Hartung of Champion. Dave was raised on the family… Read More » farm 9 miles east of Champion. He took over the farm at the age of 15 when his dad got sick early in life. Dave married Helen Ewanchuk on October 27, 1962 in Calgary. They resided on the farm after being married for over 50 years.
They had two boys: Dean, born in October 1963 and Darcy, born in October of 1972. Dave was a man of the land and loved farming, especially his cattle. He was a kind-hearted soul who loved his family, and would sacrifice anything for them. He worked hard days and long hours throughout his 70 plus years living on the farm. Dave and Helen moved to Vulcan in March of 2013 making trips back and forth to the farm until it was sold to Eric and Holly Steeves. Dave loved hanging out with his three granddaughters over the years as they were growing up. Many sleepovers happened, and many treats from grandma’s kitchen were eaten. Dad’s biggest joys in life were farming and family, and his biggest sorrow was the death of his great-grandson Kaleb in September of 2013.
In July of 2016 Dave was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. He fought hard and with the love of God, the support of his wife Helen and his family, Dave managed to defy all the odds given against him. Dave was loved by almost all who knew him. He left a legacy to his family on how to suffer with patience and die with dignity. As his daughter in law Louise said, “he was the kindest and best of men.” His presence will be missed in all the lives of the people he touched. David is survived by his wife Helen of nearly 57 years, his son Dean (Louise) of Vulcan, and son Darcy (Tim) of Chestermere, granddaughters Sarah Kuntz (Nick) of Arrowwood, Hannah Taylor (Evan) of Orillia, Ontario, and Leah Hartung of Vulcan. Dad had 10 great-grandchildren, 9 of whom he met. He is also survived by his brother Alfred (Myrna), and his sisters Dorothy, and Mary-Anne (Hank) of Calgary. He is also survived by many other cherished family members including many nieces and nephews.
His presence will be missed by his family, but he will live in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Donations in memory of Dave can be given to the Vulcan Community Health Care Center-Palliative Care Unit, 610 Elizabeth St. Vulcan AB. T0L 2B0. We thank Dr. Hudson and the staff of the Vulcan Community Health Care Centre, Home Care, and all the wonderful people who helped out with dads care over the years. A special thanks to Pastor David Skinner for the many visits throughout the past few years and especially in the past few weeks.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de David Hartung Vulcan..
