Darrel Edward Burgess

Burgess, Darrel Edward, 80 of Lower Truro passed away peacefully on September 25, 2019 at Wynn Park Villa, Truro after a lengthy thirteen year journey with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Beaverbrook, Colchester County on May 30, 1939, a son of the late Murray and Edna (McCallum) Burgess. Darrel lived in Beaverbrook until his teenage years, at which time he attended Horton Academy in Wolfville for his high school education. His oldest brother Ross was attending Acadia University at this time. After graduating he returned to Truro where he worked as a welder for a few years before becoming a machinist. He worked at Michelin Tire in Granton and then at Spectra Premium in Debert as a machinist until his retirement. The following year Darrel and his brother Reuben travelled to New Zealand to visit their brother Alvin and his family. That was a trip of a lifetime for sure. Darrel also started golfing and stick curling later in life and enjoyed both very much. He was able to continue both sports for quite some time, even as his illness progressed. He had a strong love for family and was known as a hard worker and someone who gave generously of his time, always willing to help family friends and neighbors. He was an adherent of Old Barns United Church and was a past member of board of stewards, church choir, Old Barn’s men’s club and also helped with the food bank garden. Darrel is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marsha (Beattie); brothers, Reuben, Leon and Alvin; sisters-in-law Ruth Burgess and Raylaine Lenaghan; brother-in-law Norm (Heather) Beattie; several nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by brothers Ross and Rodney; sisters Geraldine, Esther and Heather; sisters-in-law Carol Burgess, Pat Burgess and Norma Burgess; brother-in-law Peter Lenaghan. Special thanks to Dr. Neil Bower and Fran for the kindness and compassion shown to Darrel over the years, staff at Debert Court and Dr. Trevor Locke and staff at Wynn Park Villa for treating Darrel with love, dignity and respect. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 4th at 3 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. Reception to follow the service. Private family interment in Old Barns Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Darrel’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Old Barns Cemetery Fund or to Old Barns United Church.
