On July 6, 1938 Walter Victor Surminsky was born in Gainsborough, SK. He was the second youngest of seven children. Brothers Andrew, Paul and Edward are deceased while brother Albert lives in Ontario, sister Helen in Winnipeg and the youngest, Donald, lives in BC.
Walter lived in Gainsborough till he was three when his family moved to Arizona, Manitoba where they settled down to farm and that is where he resided till his death.
On March 26, 1977 Walter married Linda Leigh Peters and the two of them lived on the farm till his death. They have no children. Walter farmed all his life – first raising turkeys and then changing to hogs and a few cattle. At one time he even had a flock of 50 sheep. He also grew his own grain and hay on the section of land he had. His life was simple but he loved to farm. He often said the best perfume he loved was the smell of fresh cut hay.
Many times his nieces and nephews would come and stay at the farm and they always knew that Uncle Walter had a candy drawer in which they could happily help themselves to. He always loved having them at the farm.
One of his passions in life was to play the piano. Of course that was never fulfilled but oh how he loved symphony music. Another passion he had was his love of dogs. Odie who is still alive was his favourite. And Odie misses him very much. Walter had a special bond with his sister Helen. The two of them were always on the same wave length. They loved to play checkers together in which his sister would always beat him. One would start a sentence and the other would finish it. Walter also had a love for God and when he could he demonstrated it. When he became very ill you could find him on the deck enjoying God’s wonderful works of creation the hummingbirds and the house wrens and orioles and all the flowers. Even though he could not farm when he got up in years he always liked to go to his niece Cathy’s place and find Danny and see how he was making out farming.
He leaves to mourn his wife Linda, brothers Albert and Don and sister Helen along with many nieces and nephews. Linda would like to thank everyone for all the thoughts of kindness, flowers and prayers.
