Obituary for
Stanley Henry Hughes
Stanley Henry Hughes, 98 years, of Wetaskiwin, passed away on August 17, 2019 in the Wetaskiwin Hospital after a brief illness. Up to this time Stan led a very full and active life.
Stan was born on the farm outside of Mayerthorpe, Alberta, to David Hughes and Alice Winifried (Bouchier) on April 19, 1921 where he and his three brothers, Leslie, Lloyd, and Doug had many adventures often involving horses with him playing the role of the teamster. He attended Hathersage School and Vermillion School of Agriculture.
The passing of his father in 1934 left his mother to raise 4 boys and a farm to manage. Times were tough but never did they go hungry or without shoes. As a young boy he did many different jobs, cleaning the school, packing ice, working on a threshing crew and hauling water for the local Chinese restaurant.
In 1938, at the age of 17 he quit school and enrolled at the Vermillion School of Agricultural. This was a pivotal time in agriculture. It was a time where horse power was being switched out for mechanical power. There was also a new emphasis on good agricultural practices. Stan met many new friends there that became lifelong friends that he remained in contact with over the years. In 1940 he graduated, and he returned home to take over running the farm for his mom. May 23, 1942 he married a good friend, Jean Richardson, daughter of Bill and Katie Richardson. They lived in converted granaries until his mom and younger brother, Doug moved into the town of Mayerthorpe
Their daughter, Betty Ann, arrived April 3, 1944 and son, Derwin, arrived September 3, 1948 a perfect family.
During the 40 ’s they boarded teachers who taught at the Hathersage School.
In 1958 they moved into their new home that had electric lights and running water. In 1961 Betty Ann attended Vermillion School of Agriculture and married Bucky Sprowl. In 1963 their son, Derwin was killed in a farm accident which had a lasting impact on Stan’s life.
In 1974 he sold the farm and moved to Mayerthorpe. It was then that he went into the School Bus Business and drove for 17 years. He also had a tree planter that he enjoyed operating.
He served as a councilor on the Municipal Council of Lac Ste Anne councilor on the Mayerthorpe Town Council, Mayerthorpe Mayor, Member of the Hospital Board, Chairman of Senior Lodge Board member of the Chamber of Commerce, Returning officer for 6 provincial elections, member of the Masonic Order for over 65 years
On January, 26, 1994 his wife Jean passed away after 51 years of marriage. He later remarried Ella February 14, 1995. They lived in Drumheller until 1999 at which time they moved to Wetaskiwin to be closer to the families.
Throughout his life he enjoyed dancing, curling, Christmas lights and woodworking.
