Rita Elna Calhoun died on August 10, 2019 in Edmonton.
Rita was born on May 20, 1931 in Mannville, to Bliss and Agnette Dickson, and grew up in Innisfree. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and married Venor Calhoun in 1954. Rita was a public health nurse for two years and then worked at home, raising four children. Rita retrained in 1991 and enjoyed nursing into her mid-70s. As all who knew her would attest, Rita gave immensely to the Edmonton community, including chairing the Rutherford House Study Group of the Canadian Federation of University Women, the Edmonton YWCA, and the Family Centre. She served on the board and as treasurer for the United Way, and was a member of the University of Alberta Senate.
Rita was beloved and cherished among her family and community. The eldest of a generation on her mother’s side, Rita was like an aunt to her many cousins. She provided selfless care to her mother and mother-in-law as they aged. Rita suffered traumatic loss when her son died at age 19. While mental illness was a continual shadow, Rita was miraculously well and able to enjoy much of the last part of her life. She and Venor especially relished their time at Kapasawin Village on Wabamun Lake. Gardening, knitting, visiting family, reading, and caring for grandchildren (furry and otherwise) were ever-pleasant pastimes. According to her grandchildren, she was the best Granny ever.
Rita is survived by her daughters Laura, Avery and Jane; her grandchildren Doug and Kristine Ritchie; and Mitchell, Bretton, and Emma Norenberg; as well as her brother, Curt (Barbara) Dickson; and nieces, Corinne and Shelley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Venor; brother, Marquis; and son, Edward Lorne (called Ted).
Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, 11526-76 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the YWCA, Edmonton.
