CAMPBELL, MICHAEL JAMES
CAMPBELL’S METCALFE VARIETY STORE
Michael James Campbell – “a natural athlete” peacefully at home on August 29, 2019. Mike was born June 19, 1943 in Ottawa to William Ernest Campbell and Suzanne Elizabeth Stella St. Jacques. Raised at the river end of Woodroffe Avenue, he enjoyed running on boom logs and sports. He was captain of a city championship hockey team, MVP of Babe Ruth baseball and a member of a city championship football team at St. Pat’s High School. He later became a golf aficionado, enjoying many rounds with friends. For thirty years Mike operated a store making a wide range of friends in his adopted town of Metcalfe. His generosity became well known there after donating the entire contents of his store to the Fire Chief to meet local needs during the ice storm. For years he kept his milk prices below that of major retailers because “kids drink milk.”
Mike is predeceased by his parents, brothers Bernard and Robert, sister Kathleen and wife Carolyn Dorion with whom he enjoyed a 21 year marriage. Mike then lived another joyous 30 year loving marriage with Marilyn (Gramma Mimi) Bertrand, who is left to mourn his loss. Also left to mourn are sons Peter (Suzanne) and David; grandchildren Connor, Taylor, Stella, Evan and Charlie; nieces, nephews, relatives and many, many friends. Thanks to the nurses and support workers of St. Elizabeth Community Care, Bayshore Health Services and Dundas County Hospice. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Daley Family Funeral Home, 6971 Bank Street, Metcalfe, Ontario on Thursday September 5 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
