Mary E. Houde (Gilbert)
June 13, 1922 – August 26, 2019
At the remarkable age of 97, Mary had a lifelong passion for artistic pursuits through painting, sculpting, and listening to her favourite Finnish composer Jean Sabelius. Her most recent artistic enterprise was a twenty year-long sculpture of her grandson’s bust that just never seemed to be perfect. She passed away peacefully on August 26, 2019 due to complications from congestive heart failure.
Loving mother of Dan (Sue) and John (Patti). Caring and supportive grandma of Ryan (Lisa), Tom (Nathalie), Dave (Jaylene), Greg, and Elizabeth. Special GG of Remy, Lauren, Connor, Noella, and Jones. Predeceased by husband Don (1976), along with her parents John and Maria Gilbert and siblings Edward, Wayne, Ray, and Signa. Survived by brother in law Bill and Inez Houde. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends that enjoyed her conversations.
Mary retired from a career in accounting at Chrysler Credit in 1986. She loved to celebrate her proud Finnish heritage and was an avid traveller; Finland and Greece were her favourite destinations along with Europe, UK, China and even South America.
The family would like to thank the staff at Granite Landing in Cambridge for their exceptional care, compassion and delicious meals over the last 6 years. If you desire, memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
