Jim Andrews Friday July 26th 2019

ANDREWS, James “Jim” Conway – Mr. Jim Andrews passed away peacefully with his family at his side at the Guelph General Hospital on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the age 80. Beloved husband of Susan (née Burns) for 46 years. Cherished and proud father of daughter Shawn (David Watson), sons James (Shannon), Scott (Jacqueline), and Cameron (Annie Simpson). Jim was the loving Papa of seven grandchildren: Oliver, Ellery, Marlowe, Vanessa, Storey, Audrey and Henry. Jim is survived by his sisters, Rosalind Kunze (Dennis) and Elizabeth Smith and his in-laws Marian Abert, Joseph (Ruth), Alex (Sharon), David (Darlene). He is predeceased by his parents, Rev. Stanley and Hope Andrews, his brother-in-law Dr. Graham Smith and sister-in-law Elizabeth. Left to remember Jim in fondness are his numerous nieces, nephews and many cherished friends.
Jim was born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 7, 1939. In 1960, he moved to Canada, eventually establishing himself as the Deputy Clerk for Halton Region. In 1968, he moved to the City of Guelph, where he was also the Deputy Clerk, and in 1984 he moved to the County of Wellington as the County Clerk, eventually becoming Wellington’s first Chief Administrative Officer. Jim cherished his time at the county and developed strong friendships with many of his colleagues, which have lasted to this day. In his crowning professional achievement, Jim spearheaded the very successful amalgamation of 21 municipalities into 7 in 1999.
Jim had many interests – he enjoyed travelling, spending summers in his garden and was very active in athletics. He played competitive rugby at the provincial level after coming to Canada and was very active at the Guelph YMCA, where he established some of his greatest friendships. Jim participated in many activities, including weight-lifting, basketball and more recently, aquafit; but he is most well-known for his running. Jim ran until his knees and back could not support him anymore, participating in six marathons, including the historic Boston Marathon, and running a personal best of 2 hours and 56 minutes at the Toronto Marathon. His running buddies knew that when the porch light was on, Jim was waiting for a run.
But Jim’s greatest love was his family. He was an affectionate and active father to his four children and supportive and loving husband to Susan, whom he would say was his perfect mate. Jim was unabashed in his pride for his kids, working stories about them into any conversation he had. When the grandchildren came, they gave Jim another generation of Andrews to garner his love and pride. This unconditional love, as well as his generous nature, wit, and humour will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered by his family.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 4th floor of the Guelph General Hospital who welcomed us, accommodated our family and provided a space that felt like home during his final days. We would also like to thank Dr. Robinson, Dr. Golu, the oncology nurses and staff in the Ambulatory Clinic at the Guelph General Hospital, who over the past four years were wonderful to Jim during his treatments, making the appointments a pleasant time for him.
Cremation has taken place. A private service was held for Jim at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Guelph with his immediate family. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Wellington County Museum (0536 Wellington County Rd 18, Fergus) on Sunday, August 25th from 2-6p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Jim’s behalf to the Guelph General Hospital, Canadian Cancer Society, or Parkinson Canada. Online donations and condolences can be made at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
