It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Lloyd Downey on Monday August 19, 2019. Born in Buchans, Newfoundland on January 27th, 1943 and raised in Winterton, Newfoundland to Harold and Laura (Pelley) Downey.
At the young age of 16 joined the Royal Bank of Canada in Heart’s Content Newfoundland having had 40 years of service with them. His career took him from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia, back to Newfoundland, back to Nova Scotia, then onto to Montreal and finally Toronto.
Earl was predeceased by his parents and him father and mother-in-law Earl and Mary Redmond of Dartmouth Nova Scotia. Leaving to mourn with broken hearts are his wife of 53 years Brenda Mary Sharon (Redmond), daughters Jill Suzann ( Michael), Danette Joann (Scott) and his most cherished grandson Ben. Also leaving behind brothers Max (Sylvia) and Family, Bob (Donna) and Family. Sisters-in-law Linda (Jack) Olsen and Family, Ann Louise (Stan) Iwanski and Family, Catherine Redmond, and Terri (Jon) MacDonald and Family. Over his career Earl had many long time banking friends with whom he kept in touch and longtime golfing buddies, Hugh, Bob and Wayne. He cherished their friendship. Special thanks to our friends Wayne and Norma Ingaldson for their longtime friendship and his care during his illness. Many thanks to the kind and compassionate doctors and nurses at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. A special thank you to Dr. Christine Ribic of St. Joseph’s hospital in Hamilton who treated and guided Earl through his kidney transplant and beyond. He had a wonderful admiration for her. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kopriva Taylor, 64 Lakeshore Rd. East in Oakville. Visitation will be Thursday August 22 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm with funeral service Friday August 23 at 10:00 am at St. Dominic’s Church, Rebecca St. Oakville. Reception to follow in the Parish Centre. No flowers by request instead donations may be made in Earl’s name to the transplant department at St. Joseph’s in Hamilton, or a charity of your choice. Earl was our gift and shall be forever grateful.
