October 18, 1930 — July 18, 2019
In loving memory of Mary Victoria Jamieson, (nee Casas) who passed away at St. Joseph’s Villa on July 18, 2019. Beloved wife of John A. Jamieson, predeceased in 2007. They were married for 40 years. Sister of Flora Alemany, Lively, and Lucy Pilon, Sudbury.Predeceased by sisters Isabel and Carmen and by brothers Fabian, Albert, and Andrew, all of Sudbury. Predeceased by brotherFrank, of Dartmouth, N.S. and by sister Petra, in childhood. Sister in law to Annette Marcon and Linda Casas. Kind aunt to many nieces and nephews, and fondly remembered bynieces JoAnne Pilon and Brenda Alemany. Sister-in-law to Eleanor Oreto (George), Ila Jamieson(William), Lenore Halfknight, and Silvia Wilder (John). Mary was born on Lorne Street at the home of her parents, Dionisio Casas and Maria Manjon Ballestero, who came to Canada in the 1920s from the village of Vega de Nuez in Zamora, Spain. Mary visited Spain with her father—one of the few in her family to do so. She was a dedicated career woman whose sense of fashion and style brightened any room. Mary graduated from Sudbury Mining and Technical School in 1949 with a diploma in Commercial-General Business. Her first job was with Local 598 of the Mine Mill Union, where she stayed until September 1957. When a change in rules allowed women not trained as registered nurses to apply, Mary set her sights on becoming a stewardess with TCA (Trans Canada) Airlines. She graduated at the top of her training class in Toronto but only spent two years flying. In early 1959, when her mother became ill, Mary returned to Sudbury. Her next job, at Fielding Construction, put her in charge of the company’s office and set her up, in 1966, for a move back to Toronto. At Dillon Engineering, she worked as an executive secretary while enjoying the single life in Toronto. Later that year, during a weekend trip with friends to the French River, Mary met Jack Jamieson, whom she later called « the love of my life. » They were married in Sudbury in October 1967 and lived together in Toronto until 1972. When Mary and Jack moved to Sudbury, they built a beautiful home on Eden Point Drive, which hosted many large gatherings of the Casas family. The couple’s dog, Boomer, was a good friend to Mary’s father, Dionisio, who lived with Jack and Mary until his death in 1980. Mary finished her working life in 1999 at Neil Smith Construction’s Sudbury office. In all, she worked for 50 years. A sociable woman, Mary always enjoyed travel, golf and curling with her friends at theIdylwylde Golf and Country Club. In 2011 she moved to Southwind Retirement Residence where Jack’s duck decoys and many family photographs kept her company. Thanks to the caring staff at St. Joseph’s Villa where Mary spent the last 3 years. Thanks also to Lia, from Caring for Loved Ones who became Mary’s true friend.
At Mary’s request there will be no funeral service.
Her ashes will be laid to rest beside her husband Jack at Thorton Cememtary at a later date.
