Obituary of Clifford Starr
Clifford, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the age of 75 years. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy Lafontaine. Clifford is survived by his wife Iona Starr; son Wavell Starr; daughter Kim Starr; grandchildren, Caige Starr and Skylar Bellegarde; siblings Doug, Edgar, Delbert, David, Calvin, Anita, Lorraine, Myrna as well as their partners and numerous extended family. Clifford Starr is a member of the Star Blanket First Nation. He completed high school in Prince Albert, then received a certificate in radiology from the University of Saskatchewan in 1964. Cliff was hired as a radiologist at the Prince Albert Community Health Clinic from 1964 to 1971. He was with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) from 1971-1988 in several capacities until 1988. His titles included Director of Communications, Executive Director, FSIN, Vice President for Education, and Executive Assistant to Chief Sol Sanderson. In 1988, Cliff began his career with the Government of Canada. He started as a District Manager of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development then eventually became the Director of Lands and Trust Services. Cliff also worked for many years for the Star Blanket band as Treaty Land Entitlement Director and a term as Chief of the Star Blanket First Nation. Cliff was a devoted volunteer in the community coaching minor hockey and baseball as well as being a coordinator for youth bowling leagues. He served as a past chairman of the Indian and Métis Friendship Centres in Prince Albert, as well as President of the Saskatchewan Association of Friendship Centers. Cliff sought to be a role model and worked for the advancement of Indigenous concerns in Saskatchewan. Wake will be held at White Calf Gym, Lebret, SK on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Lead by Pastor Lorraine Keewatin. Traditional Funeral Service to be lead by Darrel Bellegarde will be held at White Calf Gym, Lebret, SK on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Interment in Star Blanket Cemetery. At the request of the family please do not bring children under 12 years old.
