Much loved wife, mother and grandmother she is survived by her husband Ivan of 58 years, her children Ivan (Anne), Anna (Allyson) and Mary (Geoff) and her grandchildren Noah, David, Steven, Georgia and August.
Stefanija was the third youngest of 9 children and was born in the small town of Jelsane in Slovenija. She lived an adventurous and courageous life. In 1956 at the age of 18 she left her home and made her way to Bari, Italy where she met Ivan, the love of her life. They were heading in different directions at the time, she went to Australia and he went to Canada. They stayed in touch and in 1960 Stefanija moved to Canada and they were married. They lived with their children in Toronto until moving to Mississauga in 1978.
Throughout her life Stefanija enjoyed learning. She took evening courses to learn English, hairdressing, Canadian cooking, baking and cake decorating as well as stained glass art. Her family and friends can attest to her artistry. Her cakes were beautiful and her stained glass works were remarkable. She was a very active person and loved to run when she was able. Some of her proudest achievements occurred when she won 2nd and 3rd place medals in the Mississauga Bread and Honey Runs in her 40’s.
She loved to travel and enjoyed discovering Canada from coast to coast and especially the Canadian Rockies and Vancouver. She had many memorable trips. She travelled to Sydney and Melbourne Australia, Rome Italy and returned several times to her home in Jelsane Slovenia and to her husband‘s home on Otok Krk in Croatia.
In her late 40’s Stefanija was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis the disease that ravaged her body for over 30 years but it never stopped her from doing the things she wanted to do and she never lost her sense of humour. Stefanija inspired all those who knew her with her perseverance, resilience and tireless determination. She was a devout Catholic and drew her strength from her faith. It is her faith and her devotion to Jesus and the Virgin Mary that helped her find peace in the final days of her life.
Stefanija was respected, loved and adored by her family and close friends and touched the lives of many people. We will miss her tremendously.
A celebration of Stefanija’s life will be held at Turner & Porter Funeral Home, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga, ON, on Friday June 21 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday June 22 at 9 a.m. at Croatian Martyrs Parish, 4605 Mississauga Rd. Mississauga, ON L5M 7C6 followed by burial at Assumption Cemetery, 6933 Tomken Rd., Mississauga ON L5T 1N4.
A reception will be held after the burial at Croatian Martyrs Parish, 4605 Mississauga Rd., Mississauga ON L5M 7C6
