Rozalia (Rose) Ivashczenko (née Glowaczka) passed away on June 24, 2019, at the Rosetown and District Health Centre at the age of 97.
Our mother was born in Poland on July 13, 1921. At a very young age her family was uprooted from their home in Poland and relocated to a collection farm in Soviet Ukraine, near Nizhni Sirohozy, Kherson. When Mom was 19 years old she was taken from her family by the Germans to work in their labor camps during World War II.
After the war, Mom went to England where she met and married Ivan Ivashczenko in 1947. Their first daughter, Valentina, was born during their time there. They then briefly went back to Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1950.
Mom and Dad settled near Gunnworth, SK and eventually moved to Rosetown where Dad was employed by the CP Railway. There they welcomed a son, George and two more daughters, Lydia and Allyson.
Mom worked for Tom Scrivens at the York Hotel in Rosetown and then later for Don and Lucille Sweet at the BA Cafe. She later did some janitorial work at Bob McNab’s Menswear, the dentist office and Rosetown Medical Group, a job which lasted many years.
In 1992 Mom returned to Ukraine with two of her daughters, Valentina and Lydia, where she was reunited with two of her sisters and their families.
In 1997 Mom moved into McNab Place, where she stayed for 19 years. In 2016 she went into Orange Memories Care Home for one year, then finally to Rose Villa in Rosetown in 2017.
Mom enjoyed her ladies’ morning coffee group, bowling and playing cards with the residents of McNab Place.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Paula Glowaczka; sisters Janet, Josephine, Helena and brother Alexander; her husband Ivan in 1987; son George in infancy in 1954; daughter Valentina Anderson in 2003; son-in-law Ron Anderson in 2016; son-in-law Ron Hare in 2017; and infant great-grandson Eli Senecal in 2018.
Mom will be sadly missed by Valentina’s sons David Anderson, his son Eren; Jonathan (Louella) Anderson, Evan and Evangelina; daughter, Lydia Hare and her daughters, Angela (Cliff) Garrett, Alex and Cole; Chandra (Aaron) Decae, Henry and Everly; Jillian (Keith) Ast; daughter Allyson (Jack) Senecal and their children, Trevor (Naomi), Brandon (Rebecca) and Adriana.
Grandma Rose was a very special person to all of her grandchildren. She was very proud of all of them and never missed a school concert, music recital or any event they were involved in. She will be sadly missed by all of us. Many thanks to the caregivers at Rose Villa for the care given to Mom during her two years that she was there. Donations may be made to the Alex Ositis Foundation, P.O. Box 1251, Rosetown, SK, S0L 2V0 or to a charity of your choice.
A Vigil of Prayer will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at St Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Rosetown. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at St Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Rosetown.
