It is with great sadness we announce that Susan Elaine (Sue) Spence of Thunder Bay and Murillo has peacefully
passed away on May 24, 2019 at TBRHSC from complicated pancreatitis. She was a special sister, sister-in-law,
aunt and friend.
Sue was born on August 6, 1951 to Elsie and Anderson Spence. She attended SS2A Oliver,
Crestview Elementary and Churchill High. In 1972 she graduated from Lakehead Regional School of Nursing
and started her 36 year nursing career at Sunnybrook in Toronto and retired from the Hospice Unit at
St. Joseph’s Hospital.
In her younger years Sue was quite the strike out pitcher while playing with the O’Connor Ladies Softball Team.
She loved all sports and was the go-to sports expert impressing all the guys in the family. She was a die-hard fan of the
Montreal Canadians and baseball – Blue Jays all the way. Sue was a « vocal armchair manager and coach ».
Sue loved all animals but especially cats. Stray cats could find her address from Toronto to Thunder Bay.
Others needed to take her donations to the Humane Society as there would be a great possibility she would
have a cat for the return ride home. She was a stray cat magnet. Another passion was travelling. Duluth was always
a good trip but the spontaneous trip to Punta Cana in February was extra special.
Sue is survived by sisters Pat (Doug Hari), Marie Barrie, Karen (Jim Dowhaniuk), nieces and nephews Spencer,
Taylor, Dawne, Julie, Jeff, Pam, Rod, Dan and Brad plus great nieces, great nephews and cousins. In addition to her
parents, she was predeceased by brother Robert, nephew Darrell and brother-in-law Wayne Barrie.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 31st from 1-4 at the
Kakabeka Falls Legion. In lieu of flowers the family gratefully requests donations to the Thunder Bay & District Humane
Society, 1535 Rosslyn Road, Tbay, P7E 6W2 or KittyKare Feline Rescue c/o 333 S. Brunswick Ave., Tbay, P7E 1W7.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
