Rita Mary Shields
On Tuesday, May 28th, Rita passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital at the age of 83. She was one of ten children of Stephen Shields and Marguerite Doyle. Rita is survived by her son Robert Brenning (Michele) and her two grandsons Trent and Troy. She is also survived by her sister Catherine Shields, her niece Diane Helliker, and many nieces and nephews.
As a young girl, Rita attended Immaculata High School and went on to study at the University of Ottawa. Throughout her life she remained an avid reader of fiction and poetry. She enjoyed pondering issues of philosophy and religion as she meticulously clipped issues of The New Yorker and The Atlantic. In her later years, she included in her readings and writings letters to and from her grandsons. In all of the places she called home, her framed copy of Desiderata was always prominently displayed. The closing words of Max Ehrmann’s timeless poem echo in our hearts…
“Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”
We wish her peace and tranquility as she transcends the boundaries of this life and
continues her journey…
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Rita Mary Shields 1935 2019..
