Prof. Laurie Jane Hendren passed away at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal on the 27th of May after a long struggle with cancer. She is survived by her daughter Jane Panangaden, her mother June Hendren, her brother Paul Hendren and her husband Prakash Panangaden.
She was born in Peterborough, Ontario, studied at Queen’s University and obtained a PhD from Cornell University. Laurie Hendren was full professor of computer science at McGill University where she held a Canada Research Chair in Compiler Tools. She is one of the founders of the Opal project at the McGill University Health Centre. She was elected Fellow of the ACM in 2009 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2012. In 2019 she was awarded the Dahl-Nygaard Prize for contributions to object oriented programming. She also won the Leo Yaffe Award for outstanding teaching in the Faculty of Science in 2005. She was an enthusiastic hockey player, a keen amateur musician, a brilliant reseacher and teacher and was possesed of a joyous vibrant spirit. Her loud infectious laugh will never be forgotten.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 on Thursday 30th May, 2019, at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont.
In lieu of flowers the family would be grateful if donations could be made to the Laurie J. Hendren Opal Cedars Fund at the Cedars Cancer Foundation (cedars.ca).
