J. Bernard Chiasson, 86 – Belliveau Cove / St. Joseph-du-Moine
November 29, 1932 – May 22, 2019
Bernard passed away peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Born in St. Joseph-du-Moine, Cape Breton (the 11th province) to Alec (à Joe Basil) and Lucie-Anne (Aucoin) Chiasson.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Maria (Villa Acadienne); sons, Jean-Paul “JP” (Nicole), Deep Brook; Julien (Jacy and special grand-pet Teju), Belliveau Cove; sister, Marie-Cecile (Hector) Deveau, St. Joseph-du-Moine. Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his brother, Gérard, and infant brother, Léonard.
In his early years Bernard worked at local fish plants before moving to “la garage à Thomas” to start a life-long career in automotive repair. After taking his trade, he moved to Belliveau Cove to be with Mom and started his apprenticeship in 1959 at “la garage à Baptiste” in Concession. After 13 years there he moved to Belliveau Motors, where he spent the next 18 years before retiring as a Senior Automotive Technician. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time at Bayview Auto Parts where he helped deliver parts throughout Digby County for a number of years. Even after illness slowed him down, he still enjoyed going to Bayview to spend time and meet people.
Bernard was a family man, from packing Mom and the kids for family vacations to his turkey dinners and rapure on all special occasions. He enjoyed all things automotive, new and old, and kept up with all the trends until the end. He was a fan of all sports, playing softball as a young man and bowling right up until a couple of years ago. He was an avid reader, from his daily newspaper, to anything about cars, sports and local history and lore.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of the Logis d’Meteghan for welcoming Bernard and making him feel at home for the past four months. Thanks also to the caring nurses and doctors at Yarmouth Regional Hospital in his final days. Thanks to all the VON who helped make it possible for him to stay at home until recently. Even though we may not know all your names, he did, and all help was greatly appreciated! A special, heartfelt thank you to his niece, Rachel, who has worked tirelessly over the past few years to help him stay in his home. And finally, thanks to all his friends who came by to visit, bring food or take him for a drive over the last while. In his words “Thanks for the visit.”
Bernard had strong beliefs, being a faithful St. Bernard’s parishioner for over 60 years. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Meteghan Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 27th in St. Bernard Church, St. Bernard. Rev. Honoré Kouassi officiating. Family flowers only. Burial in the Parish cemetery with reception to follow at the new St. Bernard Fire Hall. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
