Darryl’s Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of Darryl Joseph Kelly announces his sudden passing at home in Deer Lake, NL, on Saturday, May 18th, 2019. He was 64.
He leaves to mourn, his devoted wife of 41 years, Christine (Warren); their children Wendy (Robert Sutton), Joanne (Devon Babstock), and Richard (Andrea Newell). Darryl and Christine’s light and life centered around their grandchildren: Emma and Matthew Sutton; Adelaide, Camden, and Cecily Babstock; and Jacob and Maria Kelly. Darryl also leaves to mourn his mother Theresa Byrne, his mother-in-law Hilda Warren, and his siblings Kerri Rowsell (Allan), Debbie Byrne, Todd Byrne, and Greg Byrne (Tobi). He also leaves his uncle Ralph Kelly, sister-in-law Judy Warren (Harrison Bragg), as well as a wide circle of family and friends.
Darryl was predeceased by his grandparents Richard and Florence Kelly, his Uncle Bernard Kelly, Uncle Leo Kelly and stepfather William Byrne.
Darryl had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and school administrator. Darryl graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts (history), a Bachelor of Education, and a Master of Education. In 1977 he started his career in his hometown of Howley as principal. He went on to teach in Cormack and Deer Lake. Over his 30-year career he was a teacher, vice principal, and principal. He excelled as an educator, touching the lives of thousands of students and took pride in their success.
An avid community volunteer, Darryl gave countless hours to the Humber Valley Heritage Society, as well as the Scout Movement.
He served as a town councilor in Deer Lake for many years and in 2005 he was elected Mayor. From municipal politics, he transitioned into provincial politics and was elected by the people of Humber Valley to serve as a progressive Conservative MHA in 2007. Darryl was a proud member of the Danny Williams government. During this time, he served as deputy speaker.
Darryl retired in 2011 to spend time with his family and close friends at home. Side by side with Christine he had a wonderful retirement enjoyed to the fullest between their gardens in the Codroy Valley all the way to the lakeshores of Howley.
Darryl leaves behind a legacy of dedication and generosity that will be felt in all of our lives in the years to come.
Family will be receiving friends at Parsons Funeral Home & Chapel, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL, on Thursday, May 23rd, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
Funeral service will take place on Friday, May 24th, at 2:00 pm, from the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church on Bennett Ave, Deer Lake, with Canon Paulette Bugden and Father Gabriel officiating. Inurnment will follow at the family plot at the cemetery in Howley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador or a Charity of choice in Darryl’s memory would be graciously appreciated by the family.
